Default Oil canister lid leaking

I’ve poured (no pun intended!) through previous threads about this issue.

There has always been a bit of seepage around the canister on my newly rebuilt 8BA. Previous owner rebuilt engine and installed canister.

While investigating this seepage, I removed the top of the canister to ensure rubber lid gasket was present. It was.
I placed the rubber gasket in the groove on the lid of the canister, tightened it (lid has a flat copper washer) and now oil gushes out of lid.

I’ve yet to try new rubber gasket, but before doing so, I’m curious about the restrictor in the oil feed line mentioned by several members.

Where exactly should it be located?

And if it’s missing, how is one installed?

As always, thanks in advance!!

It’s usually a 90* fitting on the side of the canister that connects the oil feed line from the back of the motor. It has about a 1/16 hole in the male end of the fitting the screws into the canister. If it’s not there you would have very low oil pressure. You may want to remove the filter and make the drain holes in the stand pipe and the return line to the pan are clear.....Mark

Not saying this is "the fix", but I had a seeper once and flipped the gasket over just to see if it would stop....it did. Someone put some vasoline around the gasket ???? not sure it worked though.

I do not have the 90* fitting.

Is the 90* fitting available?

If not, what options exist?

There are straight fittings with the .060” restrictor. Check your brass fitting to see if it is actually a restrictor.

that could be a restricter fitting, you won't know until you look inside.

It is a restricted fitting…so I got that going for me, which is nice!!

I put a 1/16 drill bit in the standpipe drain holes…it went fairly easily on one side but not the other…they are now both open.

Sounds like the next two rule outs are to check that return line at bottom of canister is clear and try new gasket…

The restrictor hole can be located anywhere in the line that feeds the canister.
These are a couple of examples of restrictor fittings and what can be done to replicate them.

What brand filter are you using? I was using the brand Macs sells, and their gaskets always leaked without tons of permatex. I switched to Wix filters, and the gasket they make fits perfectly, no more leaks.

Just a thought to what might be an easy fix.

One thought. If you over tighten the top bolt that secures the lid it is possible to distort the lip of the lid that provides the sealing with the gasket. Also, be sure to use use a soft copper washer on the bolt.

Did you find the restrictor fitting? If it’s missing it would explain the leak as pressure inside the canister would be higher than it would be with the fitting. How’s the oil pressure?

Thanks for the input!
I do have a restrictor on the oil supply line.
I just received a Wix filter with new gasket…I’m going to check that the oil return line is clear and then refill oil and see what happens…

I've got a canister on my sedan that requires the lid be tapped down with a hammer. The raised edge of the can seems to be really tight against the lid I have. Could be because the lid is chrome and has extra thickness built up.

I haven't got to the point of checking for leaks but here is what my fitting looks like. has a .055 hole. Figuring out the oil line routing from a different, current thread.
