cam journal o.d. vs block bore i.d., & other ?
(1) I have an engine with the center camshaft journal is .002 undersize and the center block bore for the cam journal is .004 oversize. what is acceptable wear? and what problems if any would come from wear that is more than acceptable. bushings are not a consideration at this point....just a question. (2) the front cam plunger spring currently sold is about 1/4" shorter but a little stronger than original. is it best to reuse the old spring, the new spring, or obtain a new one locally that is the same length? (3) does the plunger cavity in the front cover wear and deepen? thanks.

Your cam is pretty good but the block is a little excessive and should have the center bearing bushed. If you run it as-is, I doubt if you'd hear any noise from it, so run it as-is! I would use the old spring although either would work just fine.

I agree with Jim regarding running as is...If you were rebuilding with significantly stronger valve springs, you would probably hear some noise when #2 & #3 exhaust valves engage the cam lobe. The only cam knock I have had to deal with had slightly over .007" combined clearance between the cam center and the block.
The plunger cavity...I can't see how it would deepen. It could wear/increase some in diameter. I've never seen a front timing gear cover worn beyond use in the plunger cavity. Your close but probably okay! Good Day! Dave in MN |
