Default Trans Dipstick

Does anyone know the part number of the trans dipstick tube O-ring? Of for real o-ring specs? Mine is dripping. I don't think I need to drop the trans pan to change that do I? Anyone ever done this repair?

It was tough to find (pin-point), and the thig drips more than you would think.

57 Ford, with the Ford-O-Matic

you should be able to pull the dipstick with tranny in the car. take the tube to a home center and should be able to come up with an O ring to fit

Unhappy Re: Trans Dipstick

I have looked all over the MPC and cannot come up with either a PN or reference.

Here is an interesting thread regarding the ring -

Quote:
...try a silicone o-ring (available from most industrial o-ring/seal suppliers)...most are a pretty modest durometer (pliable) and they have good temperature resistance.

I use either a 60-70 Shore (durometer) Viton o-ring or Silicone o-ring in my trannies..

There should be an A/T PARTS SUPPLY in your area. Maybe go to a large TRANS SHOP and they may have or can refer you to a source.

There is NO o-ring on a Fordomatic dipstick tube. The tube to pan seal is by flare connection.

... hmm ...

You know what is worse than just getting old (besides ugly)?

Senility and CRS.

Must be why I could not find a reference ...

Dominic is correct. Flare fitting. Check tightness first. If that doesn't resolve, remove and inspect for damaged threads/flare. Never had an issue with any of mine leaking. Might be worth a shot to use some Permatex on the threads if all else fails, but shouldn't be necessary.

Good luck!

Wow, no wonder I could not find the part number. Glad I asked now. It's not dripping bad. I am the type that does not like to leave things to chance, so I will jack up that side of the car, and put it on jack-stands. Then I can pull it off, inspect it, clean everything, and make a good attempt at getting in on right.

Thank you so much everyone.

Here is another ILL that may help -

I would think TEFLON THREAD SEALER would also be a good touch.

Maybe clean and smooth the flare, thread tape may not help as the flare is the seal, metal to metal. It may be the leak is from the actual weld of the spud on the pan. Worse comes to worse you could use some fluorescent dye and ultraviolet lamp.

It could just have some crud in it, and/or be lose too. I bet it is something simple. Now that I know the lay-of-the-land, it's just a matter of taking it apart , cleaning every thing up, and putting it back together.
