How can I jack up the pickup after the rear axle is removed???
HI,
Yesterday I removed the rear axle from my 29 pickup. All went well with the one exception. The shackles on both axle sides didn't want to slide out. After an hour of pounding they came out. (yes i had a spring spreader on it.) The rear spring is still installed in the bed. The entire axle assembly is out. I made an axle dolly, however the pickup is sitting to low on the jack stands. I want to lift the rear of the pickup to move the jack stand up a few notches. Any suggestions on how to lift the rear of the pickup without the rear axle attached? (So I can add more clearance to slide the axle back under.) Currently, I can't clear the drums under the rear fenders. Even if I angle the axle with the dolly. Thank you. |

I would get my hi-lift jack out, put it on the channel below the tailgate and jack from the back of the bed. Watch the gap between the front of the bed and back of cab. If the mounting bolts are loose you will have to tighten them up. Make sure the front wheels can't roll forward.
Others may have a safer way. Hi-lift jack: https://www.amazon.com/Hi-Lift-Jack-...455348246&th=1 |

Re: How can I jack up the pickup after the rear axle is removed???
I'll assume the frame is on jack stands. Why not just jack each side enough to raise the stand one notch at a time until you get it high enough ? Seems like you may only need a couple notches.
I guess I'm not sure why it won't go back under when it appears it came out. But, no matter. It needs to go back together whatever it takes. Last edited by Patrick L.; 04-14-2022 at 01:34 PM. |

Are the wheels on the axel ? If so, remove them and put the rear end on dollies

Just jack up under the centre of the rear spring.

Yup, wheels off and slide the axle out from the car with square timber.

It's sometimes easier to unbolt the spring from the crossmember. It just depends on what the task requires.
Keep several bottle jacks handy with plenty of cribbing to get to the needed height. There is always something in the middle that makes it hard to use one jack. Last edited by rotorwrench; 04-14-2022 at 06:38 PM. |

Can you rig a winch to the rafters and then use a sling under the car to lift it?
Or, can you slide the rear end horizontally under the car to clear the fenders and then lift it to move it forward into place? It sounds like you have already tried that. Or, get some of your big bruddahs to help.

Take the front wheels off, lower the front end down.

Re: How can I jack up the pickup after the rear axle is removed???
I would use a 4x4 on the frame behind the transmission, the a floor jack to lift to rear of the truck. With the engine and transmission in place, there would be enough weight on the front of the truck to hold that end down. If not, move the 4x4 and jack farther back on the frame.

Re: How can I jack up the pickup after the rear axle is removed???
With radius rods and torque tube it makes it limited on where two jacks can be placed on the frame and still be able to wheel the rear axle out from under the vehicle. Just in front of the rear running board brackets seems to be the best point for straight up jacking. The complete rear axle it a pretty good chunk of the weight rear of the fore & aft center line of the car. Lifting the body & frame after the spring is detached reduces the weight on the jacks a good bit. A person can jack it farther aft but the radius rods would have to be removed to roll the rear drive assembly out.
To use an overhead hoist, some form of a lifting adapter would have to be fabricated to clear the running boards and still lift from the frame rails. A spreader would likely have to be used to work over the car with lift straps, cables, etc to clear the body & top. A lot depends on how far a person is willing to go to set it up in a way that will work for most applications. Not a lot of folks have a post lift in their shop. Even with a post lift a person may need height adjustable lifting pads to clear the running boards. A floor jack on each side might be another alternative. |

I have my T sitting on this square tubing. I am sure I could jack it higher.
I would use two jacks. John
