Default Crank pulley rubbing oil pan lip

Hey guys,

I have a fresh installed 59ab in my 33. I noticed a squeak/chirp coming from the front of the motor and after investigation I have found that the crank pulley is rubbing the oil pan lip.

The motor came with a double pulley on the front and I only needed a single so I took the crank pulley off to have the front pulley machined off.

Did I over tourque it when I reinstalled? Am I missing something?

You can see the shiny ring where it has rubbed in the picture below.

That’s weird. Appears not to be rubbing on the other side of the pan. Not sure of the setup on your 59AB, but on my 59A, I also swapped out the original double groove crank pulley for a stock single groove pulley. In my setup, I used the hand crank nut with a washer. The crank pulley has a shoulder inside the centre bore that the washer rests against. So it is impossible to over torque the nut forcing the pulley further into the pan/seal. My pulley came to rest against the crankshaft oil slinger washer. I think something is wrong with your pan.

Did your pulley have an extended area that slips over the crankshaft and has a scrolled oil-seal surface on it? Do you have a picture of the pulley before you installed it? The seal surface rides up against an oil slinger on the front of the crankshaft pulley - I wonder if that is missing? It is easy to forget to put it on during assembly . . .

Here is the only picture I have of the pulley. It’s not a great one to see the part the goes toward the engine. This is before the front pulley was machined off.

Looks like the correct extension/seal area is there. I wonder if the slinger is missing. You may be able to fashion a washer/shim the thickness of the slinger to space the pulley out (assuming no oil leakage now). It'd need to be about 1/16" thick or so and small enough OD to fit through the front seal and have a slot filed in the ID to slip over the crank key. Otherwise have to remove timing cover to install a slinger.

There is a small oil leak from that area when the engine is running.

Does the belt line up with the water pump or is the crank pulley further back?

Is it an original Ford pulley? It looks so nice!

I'm wondering about your pulley . . . what type of material is it made out of? It looks like a 100% machined item?

I've not had this particular pulley, but I'm wondering if it was made by a modern manufacturer, and they have the dimensions wrong on the back of the inner pulley sheave.

I’m not sure what it’s made out of, but I’m pretty sure it’s modern.

The motor was built by H&H.

Timing cover and oil pan to replace the slinger.

I’d try swapping out the pulley for a stock one to see if the problem goes away. The machined pulley might not be made correctly.

If this was my engine, I'd take the pulley, put it on a lathe and cut/relieve the backside of it for clearance. It looks to be a billet aluminum pulley - the job would be easy.

The sad part is whomever designed this pulley and manufactured it, appears to have done very little "test fitting" to see that the darn thing actually worked . . . then they went ahead and just installed it.

Best of luck!
