redneck gas tank story
My brother was wanting to buy his deceased brother-in-laws 1930 C**** sedan that has been sitting for 20-25 years and needed a little help to get it running.The gas tank was dry and it's condition unknown.We hooked up a new battery,hit the starter and had a good spark! Now for the fuel.Updraft carburetor.... uh oh,how do we prime it and get fuel in this thing? Nearby was an old lawn edger. In about five seconds I had the quart sized gas tank and fuel line off. Next we removed the line from the carburetor side of the fuel pump and forced the rubber hose from the edger tank over it. Now it's gravity fed. After a couple of stomps on the starter button it was running!
I'm sure it's been done before but my brother now thinks I'm a genius.I'm going to leave it at that. |

I just hope that you used rubber gloves when working on that thing. Hand sanitizer works also.

I seen some backyard mechanic using an empty plastic milk jug propped up with baling wire inside the engine compartment near the voltage regulator. He had it piped down to the fuel pump inlet. It was temporary of course until he could get a new gas tank. It was a pretty rotten '56 Ford 9-passenger station wagon with a rust hole in the gas tank.
You could only go around the block a few times in that thing before you had to fill up the milk jug again. |

we had a Bradford that we fitted a Hudson teraplane engine to, tried it out up the street, with one person steering, one on the funny looking shift levers on the transmission to get the gears, god only knows why the guy steering was sitting on backwards, and me pouring fuel onto a funnel on the carb fuel line.
we burned up the street (dirt )and did a big turn at the other end and ploughed into Mr Palmers new Fiat car, man did we get into trouble. Lawrie |

I had a picture of a clean out operation can’t find it anymore. Tank I was going to use was rusty, ratchet strapped it to mu backhoe wheel, lifted that side up with the outrigger. 4 speeds one way, one backward. Boney rock and water and tumble awhile, remove cap and run both ways until empty.
The one I have now has the “magic” white coating in it now falling apart so will be strapping it to a tractor somewhere to to try to polish it clean. |

I have a small plastic boat tank along with a solid state electric fuel pump that I use to bypass a crusty or non existent gas tank/fuel pump. Not much money, doesn't take much room on a shelf in the shop and safer than trying to jury rig a container for gravity feed for initial or temporary start That along with an internal resistance coil, universal ignition switch and a Ford type solenoid and some jumper wires and you're all set.
