33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
Can some one provide some pictures or insight into where the rear window drain tube exits the car and what type of attachment is it?
Thanks, Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
There's no attachment in the usual sense as the drain tube just inserts into the hole for that purpose on the right side sill behind the upright quarter panel strainer (support).

Would you happen to have a picture? This car has new floors, wheel wells and lower quarters.
Thanks! Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
My 33 5W has a pipe clamp on the rear wheelwell to guide the drain pipe. I'm not sure where the pipe is supposed to exit, but it appears to dump out behind the rear quarter onto the rear part of the running board.
I have a picture somewhere I will see if I can find it or take a new one. I don't know if the clamp is original but it looks like it has been there a very long time. Mart. |

The photo below will at give you the location of the hole where the tube inserts into the sill behind the strainer. The sills and floor in the photo are original to that coupe (a '33).

Yes, the hole in your red circle. That in your green circle is a cage nut for the rear fender attachment.

Mart,
That's a very different floor configuration than that in North American '33 coupes as it lacks the depressed area for the foot well. Has the floor been modifies or replaced? |

This is the clip and pipe remnants in my unrestored 33 5w.

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
Either location is seriously stupid design as they empty into areas with little (on top of the frame) or no air circulation (Mart's coupe's location is a sure fire killer of rocker panels) to dry out after the rain stops. Luckily, it never rains in England.

although i have limited experience, i find that there is a lot of poor design in the model 40's. too bad they are so fricken cool looking that we have to deal with it.

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
My 34 5W also had the clamp and remnants of the hose to drain in the same location. I do have the hole in the floor for the tube in the other location.

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
My floor has been replaced and it is not correct for originality.
Now that I see Mart’s picture I believe mine had tube remnants when I got it but no clamp. It was 8 years ago so my memory is not great. Thanks guys for all of the info. As I am already not original, I’ll use the hole that I have, or find somewhere that makes more sense. I really appreciate the input and hopefully this thread helps someone in the future, as there is virtually no info on this topic on the internet that I could find. I couldn’t even find it in the 1933-1934 Ford restoration manual from the early v8 club. Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
My apologies to all; on looking in the car in my photo rather than at just the photo, Mart's green circle does indeed include the clip for the subject drain tube.

David, absolutely no need to apologise. We all appreciate your valuable input. I agree, dumping water down into the quarter makes no sense. In my case, there is no bottom to the quarter anyway, probably due to rust from water in that area. the other pic, isn't my car (which is American, for the record) and I think may be taken from the trunk side.

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
If the tube runs out the bottom of the quarter doesn’t that put it on top of the running board?
Strange that they designed it that way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
There is a hole to drain it. No more a problem than dumping the trunk gutter onto the rear section of the floor. Or windows draining into the bottom of the doors.

Re: 33 5w coupe rear window drain tube.
The problem with North American '33s and '34s (unlike the Australian varieties) is that the running board fits tight up against the bottom of the quarter panel denying at least some of the water an escape route and at the same blocking air circulation to dry out any blocked moisture. As I noted earlier, it is a stupid design and helps explain why even many low mileage original '33-'34s have rust holes in their rocker panels.
Maybe the Ford engineers learned their lesson as there is noticeable gap between the bottom of the quarter panels and the top of the running boards on '35s and up so there was no longer any interference between the drain hole and the running board. |
