Default Has anyone used this starter drive?

1948 coupe with 59AB engine.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/391083377295...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm looking for a replacement starter drive gear assembly for the stock starter that came on an engine that I bought. The one I have is a little different than the one shown in the link. Mine uses an acme type thread to drive the starter gear like this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/172444095560...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm wondering if the foreign made parts work good and are reliable.

Anyone have experience with the type in the first link?

Thanks

That little tiny spring doesn't look like it will last to me. They might be OK but I think I would stick with the inertial/threaded type. There still should be a lot of the standard types around. They must have made a billion of the damn things. They do break the flat coil springs now and then but they are available and so are the special bolts.

Bolts:
Stay far away from that first starter drive. Looks like a poor imitation and is quite a bit different than the OEM FORD unit that I just took photos of below. The gear teeth are different configuration and the weak little spring raises questions. Plus, it looks too short. Looks like cheap off shore junk that's giving off bad vibrations. The second photo you posted looks like the real deal. If the teeth aren't chipped and the spring's not broke, I would buy that one.

If you look at the photo of the US made on on Mac VP's site, it has the little spring but is likely the only repro out there other than the modern Bendix type version that some folks have had trouble getting inside around the flywheel. The OEM types were available up into the 80s but it looks like not so much now. There should be a lot of good used or even NOS ones still out there. They were produced by a lot of different manufacturers back in the day as aftermarket auto parts.

The "modern" style, is that the one with the rubber inside?
I ask as in one of the service bulletins shows a rubber type bendix aswell as the regular spring type were all used to.
Wounder what became of the Ford rubber ones, and why they stopped making them.
Martin.

The modern type that I refer to has an overrunning clutch & spring set up intalled in a near cylindrical case. I'm not sure if there is rubber in there or not.

I bought one of these off Mac. He said they were US made and if he's prepared to sell them well that's good enough for me as a recommendation.
