Suprise Arrival
I wasn't expecting this until tomorrow or Friday......but.......here it is.
A '29 Sport Coupe that needs some attention. It belongs to a friend of mine and it has had little attention since he has such a busy schedule. The plan is to get it back to a safe running and driving vehicle. So we will go through the whole car to get it that way. Does the fun ever stop? Last edited by 2935ford; 06-30-2020 at 08:22 AM. |

I'll bet that paint shines up real nice under all that dust.

Re: Suprise Arrival
Well, this is just a work project as the vehicle is still his.
I have no history on it but my friend purchased it about a year and a half ago. I saw it advertised then but I was not in a position to bag it for myself. So, I get to get her road worthy. |

Re: Suprise Arrival
The step plate on the fender looks low and seems to have a shim. Is that the pic or is it a little different?

Re: Suprise Arrival
Sweet, make sure you give it a very good test drive after your done and before you give it back, say maybe, two/three thousand miles, you know...just to be sure.
This could take a while.

Re: Suprise Arrival
good for your friend (the owner of the car) for wanting to go through the paces to check over the entire car mechanically before using it. that seems to be a rarity as many of the new owner posts i read just get in them and go, then start posting all their issues and problems. many dont even check the flluids

Re: Suprise Arrival
Enjoy the project. Wake up and clean up seems to be more common than restoration nowadays, and still a rewarding experience.

Re: Suprise Arrival
Thanks. It is going to be fun for sure.
To my knowledge this is a Canadian built car and the use of Robertson screws leads me to believe this. A few more pics. The gas in the bowl sure is ugly. A recommendation to pull it and flush it and seal it. Nice set of wheels and tires to go on it. Powerhouse gen.......e brake above the shifter........ It was running when he bought it but he put a different carb and distrib on it thinking it would help and it never started after that. Little of this and a little of that to get her road ready. Re: Suprise Arrival
It even has the correct Canadian powerhouse.
Notice the larger diameter and tapered edge down to the rear cover. |

Re: Suprise Arrival
The water pump fan looks like it could be an original pressed steel type. Be sure to check it for any evidence of cracks developing or better still just replace it with a solid aluminium one.

Re: Suprise Arrival
Well, here we go.
Got all the wheels off. Took the drums off....they will all need to be replaced. Owner will be purchasing all new drums and hubs. Seems a normal "back in the day" process was if the lug bolts came lose.....you just weld them in place. The brake shoe lining will also need to be replaced. Got the gas tank out and off to be cleaned and coated. Took the carb off and found debris in there. Cleaned that out. Pulled the fan to be replaced by and aluminum one and to get a new upper rad hose. Drained the oil. Checked the fluids in the trans (pretty gooey stuff) and rear axle which looks good. Rear axle seals appear to be holding. Cleaned and repacked the front wheel bearings. Checked all the brake rods. Need a few pills for the front brake rod to reposition the actuator to the 15 degree forward. All in all not a bad days work. Last edited by 2935ford; 06-30-2020 at 08:22 AM. |

Re: Suprise Arrival
Ok
Since we work on this one day a week for a few hours the updates will reflect this. We now have the tank cleaned and back in. The wiring is being sorted out. We now have all the shoes stripped of the old linings and the backing plates are ready to be cleaned. PO had the speedo cable fed the wrong way since they had the gear on the torque tube facing the wrong direction. Good progress. New parts to be ordered/purchased are the brake rollers/pins, adjusting shafts/pins, battery cables, sediment bulb assembly and headlight socket assemblies. Re: Suprise Arrival
Sorry for the long delay but we are back.
Finished up just about everything we intend to do to the car. Put on the new 4 blade fan, all the brakes shoes and new drums are on and adjusted. Trans is just loaded with what looks like molasses only thicker. Used some ATF in it. Sorted out the wiring and in the process fried the pop out. We will "modernize" it some by using a wire and just the casing screwed into the distrib then get the later two pole switch wired to it. Headlights wired and working. Horn, well a different story. The original harness and light switch body did not allow for hi beam. He had a newer body so we switched just the top half....that allowed the lights to function properly but now the horn rod is to short! Put gas in the tank and a couple of turns and she fired. Took it off the roll dollies and backed it out of the garage. A few carb adjustments and we let it idle for about 15 minutes. No smoke, no leaks, just a pretty good running little A. After the warm up pulled the trans drain plug but not much of the molasses came out. The ATF did so we replaced it with 600w oil. It's going to take some time and some runs and oil changes for that trans. A few things to tidy up and it's back to the customer. That was fun! Last edited by 2935ford; 06-30-2020 at 08:22 AM. |

Re: Suprise Arrival
I really enjoyed your post on this fine looking A. You do such fine work, I wish I could look over your shoulder as you do the back brakes. The PO of my 29 A really messed my rear brakes up. But I bought the Vol. 1 and am reading it, and trying to understand how mechanical brakes work. Well I have rambled on long enough, But let me say Well Done Sir! Don in N. W. Indiana

Re: Suprise Arrival
Don, thank you.
There is a lot to mechanical brakes but just brake (pardon the pun) it down into small portions to work on. If you have good original parts to work with, life is a whole lot easier that's for sure. If not try to source them. Do you have a Model A group in your are that may lend a hand? |

To finish this thread off......here's a You T vid of the owner picking it up. He had a rollback coming right behind him as he took it for a little putt. A little more tuning and she'll be off and running for next season! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2yK...ature=youtu.be |
