Default Making tool

I am so blessed to not only have customers that have the ability. machinery and materials to help me with my hobby. In this case, I was able to raid one of my customers scrap rack and get the material I needed to make a special tool for removing the detent screw on shifter housings that those of Us who attended Mac Van Pelts transmission school for two days will recognize. I got the screwdriver shafts machined for the bearing and ready to drill the end for the screwdriver bit and drill and tap the holes for the set screws to hold it in. I got the housing for the hydraulic shop press end cut today and will machine the cut faces in prep for boring the 1-1/2 + hole one the one end and the 1-1/8 hole on the other for the press fit bearing. My customer I got the material from will machine the 2-1/8 housings for me as his lathe and mill are WAY more professional and sized to handle that BUT should have two of them finished by the middle to end of the week!! IF any one wants one I “might” be able to get a few more made??? I will look this week to see IF there is anymore 2-1/8 or bigger round bar.

I find heating the casting around the detent caps will allow a screwdriver to remove the caps. If you look closely at the slot in the caps they are not for a flat edge screwdriver. The slot is deeper in the center and shallower at the two ends. because of this even if heated a regular screwdriver will often jump out of the slot, messing up the caps appearance. Heat will also destroy the springs in the casting for the detent.

Robert,

100% interested. I should have figured you'd make one of these up.

Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Tim

Rockfla: Well done. Can't beat having machine tools to get the job done.
Wish I was your next door neighbor.
