Thanks again for everyone's input.
Okay, this is what I have done.
I measured the end play and it was just over 1/8 inch. I ended up moving the collar up against the pump housing to eliminate the overall end play. I now have it set at 1/32. I did not realize until I went out and took another look at the collar, that the Teflon washer was sitting between the collar and the rear portion of the front housing.
Now that I have taken up the end play, the fan as it had before, stops the shaft from going rearward, the collar stops it from going forward.
Can this possibly be right?

Light just came on!!! Is my thinking flawed?
Is everyone telling me that I only want to stop the rearward movement of the shaft? Therefore, the collar must be put on either in front of the packing nut, or if possible, behind the fan? Having the fan pulley itself stopping rear movement is not such a grand idea is it? I am now wondering how much damage may have taken place by driving the vehicle for 90 plus miles.
Can anyone confirm that I might finally be on the right track?

You can't just push the collar forward on the shaft to get rid of end play.The shaft has the be held FORWARD.Holding it forward keeps the thrust washer between the impeller and rear bushing in place.Doing it your way will take up the slack,but then the loose washer will act like a lathe bit after a while,cutting into the shaft.I have run mine for years with no teflon or nylon washers.with a little grease on them there seems to be no ill effects.

Can I simply run the collar back to the packing nut with the appropriate clearance without the Teflon washer and be good to go? I am trying to avoid taking off the pump along with the radiator and so on.

You may be able to carefully cut a slit in the teflon washer, twist it off the shaft then re-install it between the packing nut and the collar. You have nothing to lose by trying that, other than the washer that isn't doing anything anyways.

I appreciate everyone's help with this matter. All of your input made me finally realize what I was doing wrong.
What I will do shortly, after getting the car back to my home garage, will be to take the pump off and make sure everything is still in good order and set it up the proper way.

Hi, In that picture it looks like the fan is/has been welded ?? if it has, and its that big, DO NOT EVEN START IT UP !!..

The fan is an aluminum one piece. Maybe the lighting in the picture?

I hope that I am wrong but it looks more like a small crack to me .

Went out and took a good look at the fan and found no cracks. This is an aluminum one piece two bladed fan. After careful inspection I find no cracks. Maybe you are seeing possible camera light aberrations.
