Clutch release shaft arm

Broken arm. A while back i said on the Form that I had clutch problems and depressed the clutch and could not shift. pulled the rear end and removed the transmission and bell housing. Did not find anything broke or wrong. Went ahead and ordered a rebuilt clutch pressure plate, new clutch disk, new throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Had the pressure plate and flywheel balanced. put it all back together, and on final assembly my son who did all the work, I just handed him the tools, was under the car and we were hooking up the adjusting arm and trunion to the lever arm, he said the arm is cracked in two, and said this might have been the problem right from the start. Well it is a shame that I did not see this right away if that was the problem. anyway have all new now and shifts just fine, good for another 40 years

A common problem. Always check for the easy stuff first.

Yep, a fairly common problem. Now we are going to have to carry a portable welder on road trips.

One guy actually finished the trip by clamping a pair of curved jaw Vise Grips on the break.

I thought back on your original post it was mentioned to check the arm????

It may have been mentioned to check the arm and if it was unfortunately I missed it. I was not aware that it is a fairly common problem. Oh well all water under the bridge now. Thanks for all your help

My brother had the same problem on his doodlebug, and when he described the problem to me, I told him then, on the phone that the arm was broken. He replaced it and is now happy.

CG: I went back and read the posts around your first question, and didn't find a reference to the arm either. We slipped up on the advice there, if I was looking at the right thread.

don't the vendors sell a heavy duty machined one? Sure doesn't look as pretty but this is one of those parts that functionality trumps looks.

were the broken arms as common when the model a was new and everywhere? I cant say I've seen alot of broken ones around or rewelded ones...ive seen just about everything else farmer fixed except that arm...

I had basically the same thing happen on my 8N tractor-the clutch arm was cracked on the side I couldn't see, and so I split the tractor and changed the clutch. D'oh!!

Also wondering, now that the issue has been resolved, Is the engine any different ie,
smoother running after the fly wheel and clutch assy. has been balanced?

Yes the vendors sell a replacement arm. I had an old housing out in the shed that I was able to get the arm off of and used that. I will have to keep an eye on it.

I have not been able to get my car on the road to test things. It is so wet and I have to drive my car over my lawn to get from the back garage to the street. My flywheel and the old pressure plate where balanced, so there may not be any difference, will see.
