Default Question about light switch

My brother-in-law installed new light switch on his 29 Tudor. After moving the switch located on the steering wheel a few times it would lock up. After multiple times of disassembling and reassembling, one of his helpers slightly lifted up on the "lever" and the switch worked beautifully, with all lights working. Is this the way it is supposed to work? He assumed you would just turn the lever to the location you wanted, not that you have to lift up on it while turning.

Assuming you are not supposed to have to pull up on the lever to make it work what should he look at to correct the situation?

How far does the rod need to be pulled up to work? Does he have the correct length installed? There were 3 lengths produced…..

There can be a number of problems with the modern reproduction light switches. There were a number of changes to the OEM switch during production until they settled on one design. A person can google the Model A Ford light switch and come up with stuff on this site and others that may help. One problem is that some of the replacement switch plates have incorrect shape to the dimples in the switch terminals and it causes stiff operation that can be troublesome.

It sounds like the retainer clip has a problem down on the bottom of the control rod. They can be a PITA to get on there but there are procedures that help if you do a search.
