Default gas tank welting

Is there some kind of welting that goes between the cowl and the gas tank on a 28-29 Model A? I didn't think there was a beaded welting there but I thought it should have solmething to help eleminate squeaks. I have the welting that goes between the body and the lower cowl.

The small bead welting runs around the back of the tank and down the cowl to the frame. On the horizontal surface at the tank ends only a thin treated fabric similar to friction tape is used.

Has anyone really found any true evidence of "fricition tape" or the such when dissassembling a tank from the cowl knowingly for the first time in 80 plus years since it was originally assembled?

Either it has deteriated over the years or I am missing something with the 10 plus tanks that I have removed over the years.

HOWEVER, I think it is a good idea to include it when the tank goes back on as Tom suggestes.

My 28 and 29 I'm sure have never been apart and they along with other low mileage 28's and 29's I've looked at has the fabric, which can be seen from the outside edge. I haven't seen the tank removed to actually hold the real thing, but it looks like friction tape as viewed fron the edge.

I found some friction tape on the firewall and on top of the cowl section
when I removed the gas tank from my 31 pickup.
I am pretty sure that this is the first time it has been removed.

Yes, and you should also find it below the header wood as well as in some of the riveted joints around the windshield area. I'm sure there are many more areas but these are just things I've seen on projects others were doing.

When I took mine apart I think it has a little cloth strip under the tank, but it was mostly worn away.

I have noticed it under one of the gas tanks I have recently removed. Additionaly, I have looked at some original drawings for a Panel Delivery and some cross sections show friction tape at the gas tank and under the wooden roof header and other locations. It appears on at least the Panel Truck it was used it quite a few areas.

Mike, maybe a tip that may help you put the welting in. When I put the welting between the tank and member above the tank, I used some wide maskinig tape and ran it around the welting and around the top member above the tank. (I had the dash out and windshield out). It held the welting up until I got the tank in. Then it was easy to pull the tape out. Don't know if this is the way to do it, but it worked for me and I did not have to fight to keep the welting from falling out.

I seen a video on youtube of the old factory assembly line. It showed the front of the 1929 cowl sides, firewall and gas tank as one unit with a guy placing it into the cowl side uprights with another guy putting in the beading and bolts. I have replaced the side and gas tank beading in a 29 coupe and it was a pain, if I had did it the way this video showed it would have been a lot easier, looks like the beading was placed on the cowl side uprights then the tank/cowl unit installed.

I found it on mu 28 Leatherback. I used black hockey stick tape when I installed the replacement tank.
