Never could figure out why they only made open cars but trucks got closed cabs! Guess Ford's lend lease only included open cars not closed?

GAZ-A were open cars (although closed cars were made in low numbers too and a few closed cars imported from USA) because open cars are much easier and quicker to make than closed cars. With new factory and new workers it makes sense.

That is true plus the Soviets had their sights set on tractor & truck production, not cars. Cars were required for govt. dept.s but private individual ownership was not the plan in a communist state trying to establish itself.
It was a contract between the Soviets & Ford Motor CO., signed in 1929 before the US govt recognised the USSR govt. Nothing to do with 'Lend Lease' or WW2. The Depression meant USSR had no foreign money available & they had great trouble paying for the Ford plants & equipment. They may well have never paid without the Depression. Because of Fords input, Russia got an auto industry ; Ford never received full repayment.

Actually, Russia had an auto industry before WW1 making Russo-Balt vehicles. The Revolution and WW1 blew that up but they were making the AMO F-15 truck (copy of a FIAT truck) before Ford stepped up to the plate.

They viewed Henry a a sucker because of his fascination with very regulated societies. He had his own social regulation program and he liked the National Socialists for theirs. A real "Bubba" in their eyes. So they took him for all he was worth. AFAIK Henry never received a dime for all the goodies he shipped over and the plants he built.

Note that these AMO were RHD just like all cars/trucks made by FIAT in Italy. Even FIATs sold in the USA in the early 1920s were RHD.

I helped a friend in Australia save a 1920s FIAT that was in a USA barn, car now in Australia! Black car below.

We are looking for more pre-war FIATs in the USA any condition, let me know. Benjamins are waiting.
