Glass lens in a 1940 interior dome light !
My search for the answer has lasted a few good years in trying to identify a glass lens that was fitted to a 1940 interior dome light, down here in Oz.
A few suggestions here and a few suggestions there but still no closer. A while back I took to the the Fordbarn here to ask from a learned colleague but still no closer then either. About 2 months back I was going through some odds and ends that a friend and I had collected over the years and here it was in this headlight staunchion. Bingo, I had found the holy grail I was looking for. I quickly searched up the net, and found the culprits identity. Now the reason for my post, if any others are contemplating going to 12 volts for their system and not wanting the plastic melting in their dome lights,, then this is the answer. Ford was clever enough to utilise the body and almost identical surround in the commercial range 39 -41 and placed a glass lense for the indicators instead of plastic. Check out the pics. |

Re: Glass lens in a 1940 interior dome light !
That is really a neat find. You can also solve the "plastic melting" problem by using a 12V LED light bulb. It also gives off lots more light. Here's a source.
https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/ba9s-ba7s/ Or you can buy the components and make your own bulb using JB Weld as the insulator as was done with the bulb on the left. When making your own, one wire from the LED is soldered to the side of the metal base and the other wire is soldered to the center contact on the bottom of the base. These 2 wires cannot touch each other otherwise you will get a "short". Be sure to paint the inside metal reflector with bright white enamel to make it even brighter. You will be amazed. Application shown is in a 40 Ford car where the bezel "snaps" in place with no screw. Last edited by 19Fordy; 02-05-2016 at 10:30 AM. |
