'40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
Anyone have a fit issue with Carpenter's rear windshield seals?

Re: '40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
The rear window rubber may split if too much pull is used on the cord to seat the rubber. The tight corners refuse to lie flat in the tight corners. My use of silicone lubricant is no friend to paint products and can be tough to clean. Have done three in the last two years and am generally satisfied. Good Luck: Fred A

Re: '40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
I Posted on this problem over a year ago.
Carpenter rear window seals DO NOT FIT, they are about an inch & half too long. At the time when I discovered this I had several discussions with the Carpenter people. All I got from this chatter was, 'WE DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM'. But we will refund your money, IF, you pay return shipping. I now use Drake for my rubber goods, THEY FIT (if they are in stock.) I still get upset over the poor customer service from the DENNIS CARPENTER personnel. Last edited by 42merc; 06-24-2015 at 10:26 AM. |

Re: '40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
Update: Sent the seals back to Carpenter. Cost me $25 originally plus $10 for shipping. Add another $9 to return them and my investment is $44.
Today I get a credit for $12.50. Apparently they have no issue with the seals. And apparently a 50% restock fee is in order. All told, I lost about $32. What did Carpenter lose? A customer (since about 1973) that has spent quite literally tens of thousands of dollars with the company. I somehow feel I was raped without as much as thoughtful kiss first...

It's a common problem, people who care are being replaced by younger ones who don't. The first generation that built these companies have moved on, retired or passed away. I predict the ones that are still fairly good will experience the same shift.

Deuce, I could not agree with you more. A person with any common sense would have cheerfully refunded all of the monies involved and kept me, a long time and heavily invested customer happy.

Re: '40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
Kube,
I put my rear windows in 20 years ago with Carpenter rubber and they were too big that long ago. One would think that they would have corrected the problem since then. I've been pulling out my "street rod" tinted glass and putting the original glass back in, lamination separations and all. Haven't ordered new rubber, to reinstall the old back glass, but thanks to your thread, I will be ordering them from Drake.

If I'm not mistaken the rear rubbers for the sedans are larger than those for a coupe. I wonder if they are sending out the ones for a sedan?

Re: '40 Ford coupe rear windshield seals
Had the same problem almost 10 years ago with Carpenter rear window seals on my 37 coupe.too big.Sent back and bought Drakes which fit great. Thirty years ago I used Carpenter seals on windshield and back window of a '53 pickup and they were great quality and fit so that's why I went with DC first.
