Fixing Droopy 40 Ford Coupe Trunk Hinges
This has been covered before, but I'd like to share with you how I recently modified the Bob Drake 40 coupe trunk hinges I bought many years ago - not the "new and improved" hinges he now makes. Now they really hold up the trunk lid with no fear of it crushing my cranium. You can feel the trunk lid lock in place and it closes easily with a little downward push.
Do one spring at a time, leaving the other spring installed so you can check to see if the hinge works better. First, use a Dremel tool to make the slot for the pin deeper so it's 1/2 inch in from the outer edge. Then reinstall the hinge to see if it works better. If it does not add the notched spring spacer to put more compression on the spring. Then reinstall again. All of this is done with the hinge clamped in a vise so you can move the hinge arm to "track" the pin path and install the spacer. Paint with automotive engine enamel spray can paint from Lowes. Let dry for 7 days. Last edited by 19Fordy; 02-04-2017 at 12:36 PM. |

Nice job. The original job was well done, and the how to illustrations are also well done.
