I'm pleased this car was saved. It will be interesting to see what this car goes for with a pre-auction estimate of $1.2 million to $1.4 million.

Like some other old car stories, this one has a few holes in it. This car was definitely for sale back in the 1980s as it was offered to me. It was in very rough condition, but despite missing and modified parts, there was no question as to it being "the" car. I declined as I already had too many old car projects (and still do). Perhaps that was a mistake, but then it wasn't the first nor likely the last.

I have always loved this car, thanks for posting and reminding me what an interesting design it is.
What I like about it is that is slightly awkward, but still beautiful, if that makes sense? I had not seen the other pictures of it in its various forms, now added to my collection of photos.

35cab, I looked at it with your comments in mind. I really like it, but the headlights look a little weird and the boattail/bustle is a bit large (does this car make my butt look big?) for the rest of the car. Pretty sweet overall, though.

Mhsprecher, The headlights do look a bit odd almost like the E&J type, but they would seem to be (from some older photos in the Tony Thacker, 32 Ford book) similar to the ones Edsel had installed.
I know what you mean about the tail being heavy, but again it somehow works. It sounds picky for me to criticise this car as I really like it, every time I think, oh if only the tail were a bit more swoopy, or the grille is a bit odd, I sit back and say that, "no it is just right the way it is, Edsel got it right." This is what I meant about it being a bit awkward, maybe it's the difference between something being pretty and something being beautiful.
I think it is nicer than the later Model 40 special Edsel had E.T. Gregorie design. (maybe!)

Having flirted with the notion of buying an Auburn boat-tail speedster years back when I received photos of the inside of the body when it was offered to me way back when, it was obvious that the same body builder (American in Indiana?) built the body for this car as they did for Auburn.

I am not implying that it wasn't a good design already. I respect Edsel Ford and Bob G. for their work, as I too am an Industrial Designer. Just thought I would play around in Photoshop a bit and found the result interesting.

35Cab, I am with you on the Model 40 Special. I have never thought it was special, other than it was another of Edsel's experimental designs. 30s Ford designs, with a couple of exceptions, were outstanding.

I can imagine the sight of Edsel flying down Lake Shore Drive in it.....very cool. I love the history of all of his one-off cars!
