Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
Back in the olden days there was a turbo'ed 4 cylinder. It was in 1987 and 1988, maybe other years. Were in the thunderbirds, (turbo coupes). I have one with the 5 speed so they are out there. Were replaced with the V-6 supercharged thunderbirds in the 90's, (super coupe).

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
Model A s had a supercharged 4. When I visited a car show in Austin Texas I saw one for the first time. It had a McCulloch super charger.

I believe the German car with the 2.3L turbo was a Merkur. They were sold in the USA too. Sal |

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
Seems like Ford had a turbo Escort & maybe a Lynx very briefly in '84 or so. I don't think they stayed in production for very long. I think the Fairmonts and Zephyrs also had a turbo 2.3L available in the early 80s. I have an '87 Turbo Coupe, owned since 1991.
I think the first year the TBirds got turbos was '83 when they were restyled from the boxey looking slabs of '80-'82. Merkurs were sold under the Merc franchise. I worked a Ford/Linc/Merc dealership from '79-'84. |

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
I had an 84 Turbo Coupe T-bird that was probably the most fun car I've ever had.Great performance and handling. On a 2500 mile trip to Florida once it averaged right at 40 MPG.That was often running 85-90 MPH to keep from getting run over on I-75 from Chattanooga on down to Florida.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
There's a guy near here that has a 87 Turbo Coupe for sale, with 64k original miles, and it is loaded, if anyone is interested.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
Carl, agree, there are a lot of souped up, changed or improved vintage engines or cars in the hobby. That's why I stated there was no supercharged Model A made by Ford available from the factory.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
I can confirm what dmsfrr posted...
I owned a '79 Mercury Capri RS, with a turbocharged 2.3L. I believe that was the first year with this set-up. Despite my taking pretty good care of it, I ended up throwing a piston rod in it around '90. The turbo was a bit finicky, by nature they run hot, and often the wastegate would stick making it run hotter, overall causing a lot of stress on the rest of the motor.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
I believe the first 2.3L OHC turbos in the Mustangs and Capris had water cooled bearings in the turbo, which were a problem. Later redesign changed the bearing to oil cooling from the engine oiling system, with a system of oil drain through of the turbo bearing at engine shutoff.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
The fuel injected 2.3 were a lot better power wise (the later the better), the efi years had a T5.....IF you can find one the Merkur made a Cosworth 2.3 with a DOHC motor. If you really want to hop it up, look around google for a Folvo . I'm going to run a German 2.0 (pinto) in my '28 (with or without a turbo not sure yet)........but that's another website.

Re: Ford turbo 4 banger
I've got one of those Mercruiser 4cyl that is 1/2 of a Ford 460, it has a CobraJet cylinder head and pistons the size of 1qt paint cans. It takes some work to get them into a car but they're beasts when done, a 4cyl with a serious thump.
