Hi John, in my case it's 1&5/16", shallow socket, but remember, not all sockets are broached the same, and not all "crank nuts" are the same.

I too have never understood all the fuss about getting the timing exact when moving the spark lever changes it anyway. I initially set mine with the spark a notch or two down from full retard so it gives me the ability to go a little more retarded or a lot more advanced. The question about why so many folks set the timing using a variety of exact methods was asked some time ago but I never got a good answer. Seems like most think the A engine has to be tuned perfectly. Agreed.... listen to the engine while driving and adjust accordingly.

I agree with that 100%. I copped a blast from a (now banned) individual here once when I said that there was no point getting all fussed about setting the timing when it's gunna be changed by the driver on the road anyway.

I am able to rotate the engine by tightening the belt beyond its normal tension, removing the spark plugs, having car in neutral and grabbing the fan blades and rotating. Yes, I do have a front tool box.

I stop using the crank a long time ago for timing. I just put the pin in and bump the starter until it goes in the hole, then put the car in third gear and using the front right tire roll the car back and worth until the pin is where I want it. it is quick and easy.

I just remove the spark plugs and turn it over by pulling on the fan belt

I always turned the engine with the plugs out and using the fan blades to rotate it to TDC using the pin................that is until I ended up with two cracked fans; one on my Model A and the other on our 31 Chrysler. Not worth killing yourself or throwing a blade through the hood.
