Smile Engine Green on exhaust manifolds.

Engine Green on exhaust manifolds.
This is obviously an early picture when Exhaust Manifolds were painted, but my question is why? It would be very obvious that the paint would burn off within the first 30 seconds, when Ford were trying to save as much as possible on producing the 'A'.
Don't see any inlet manifolds.
Any thoughts anybody.

every color photo and info i have found seems to point to bare metal for exhaust manifold, and ford green for the intake manifold. i painted mine with what is advertised as for use to give bare metal appearance, but it will probably burn off as you say.

Sorry folks. No colour. With a line up of engine blocks, bellhousings and flywheel housings, they have to have come from the "Engine Green" paint department. I can't see any other explanation for the picture.

The caption says:
Machined castings on their way from the machine shop to the paint department.

Did they paint the machined areas as well as the cast surfaces? Nothing looks masked. Wouldn't think they would paint the deck of the block, intake/exhaust manifold surfaces and front and rear machined surfaces. Any thoughts?

Masking would be done in the paint department.

Possibly a more accurate caption would be
"Machined castings leaving the machine shop", and the exhaust manifolds will be routed to a different department on the other side of the wall.

Ever seen an NOS Exhaust manifold with green paint? I haven't. Seen more than a few NOS intakes & other engine parts with original paint however.

I highly doubt they were ever painted, knowing Henry Ford's panache for no waste and no wasted moves. Painting an exhaust manifold with normal paint would be a fruitless endeavor.

Ford Motor used snap on covers over the top of the cylinder head & side of block during the painting process.

The Ford Green paint should be on the INTAKE manifold, not the exhaust manifold. Most Model A stores sell a silver paint for the exhaust manifold.

I sprayed mine with cast iron VHT paint and baked (cured) it just as the instructions stated. My wife would not let me use the oven so I had to use the gas grill. LOL

I agree with Joe Way. I’ve worked in production machine shops and not all parts leaving one process area necessarily go to the same place afterwards. A misquote caption or a broad generalization, is my guess.

I know the intake should be green but that was a bit boring for me. I shot mine semi-gloss black for a bit of contrast. Looks great!

You can read under the photo that the parts are fresh machined and on their way to paint dept.

Just for the heck of it I had mine Cadmium plated.

The paint department most certainly included a de-oiling or degreasing function to clean the castings prior to painting and the manifolds could have been diverted off of the paint line after degreasing to join the painted castings further down the line.
