As I’m going through the rear axle brakes on my car, I’ve discovered a number of problems, including an emergency brake lever that is frozen in its bushing, and I mean really frozen. Ive had Kroil on it for 4- 5 days now, but have not been able to break it loose to remove it and replace the bushing. And, to make matters worse, the bushing rotates in the carrier with the lever, so I guess that;s how the brake was working, because it did work.

I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who has run into this same issue !

You're talking about the toggle lever, correct? Can you not pull or press the lever out with the bushings all at once? Or can you not get the lever off where the brake rod attaches? If it's all seized together there may be no alternative to cutting it apart.

You may need to resort to the hot wrench (Acetylene torch) to remove the toggle lever from the e brake shaft on the rear backing plate. Remove nut and bolt. A half round key on the shaft keeps it from turning. Get it good and hot and pry it off. This should only be a last ditch effort after everything else fails. Toggle levers are left and right. Don't get them mixed up when installing. The shaft will then come out from the outside.
