Electric fuel pump

Hi folks, I've been thinking of installing an electric fuel pump on my 47 merc. coupe. Would like a 2-4 psi. 6 volt. Only need it for starting, or in case of a vapor lock. Will be using the mechanical pump for driving. Will the mechanical draw the gas through the electric pump, don't really want to install a bypass line.

I'm not sure about all electric pumps, but Airtex 8902 your mech pump will work. Install it right front of fuel tank.

Iinstalled one on my 38 coupe for that reason, no problems

Airex on my 35... Right in the frame rails where it starts to go straight in front of the rear end. Make sure you angle it up a few degrees so it doesn't cavitate

We get ours from C&G 800/266-0470. For 6 volts, 11A-9350-E6, for 12 volt 11A-950-E12. This pump will allow flow-thru so your mechanical pump can remain in place. If you want the filter, a good idea, order 11A-9350-EF. Place the filter between the gas tank and the pump. The pump comes with a mounting bracket, flexible hoses, and clamps. We use ours to refill the carb after setting for awhile, and as a "crutch" to get home in the event of a mechanical pump failure. We install them with a spring loaded toggle switch so it can't run when the vehicle is unattended, and to prevent fuel loss in the event of an accident.

Aitex on my '41. Been on it for 4 years. No problems. Installed mine as close to the fuel tank as possible. Installed a toggle switch under the dash that can't be seen. I only use it if needed such as with alcohol gas problems etc.

Yup, We have one on our 46 and only use it after the car has sat a week. Not very common. It did get us home one time at night coming back from Hemmings and started skipping bad on the hills. I flicked it on and smoothed right out. On the next long hill into town it started skipping again so I turned it on again and got home. When I pulled it into the shop and looked to check the engine I found that the gasket on the fuel pump glass bowl was leaking badly and the back of the engine was covered with gas!! No fire so we were lucky.\
So, the other day, when I turned it on before starting there was no pumping sound so I figured it was shot. Researched new Airtex pumps and then before I ordered one I asked Old Henry about changing it. He has a "magic" hammer that he uses on his starter, generator and Airtex pump. So I found a "magic hammer" in my tools and gave the Airtex a couple of light taps. Good ever since

Yep got one also. Fuel tank to shut off valve to filter to electric pump. Works great!!

Not trying to be a "butt-in-ski" or hi-jack your question, but I installed a radiator petcock shut off between tank, the fuel filter and the pump. Also a theft deterent and makes it less messy when installing new filter or pump or when working on the fuel line. Soldered in place with that section of fuel line removed. Fuel line is 1/4 in. OD. The round rubber piece prevents petcock from hitting floor pan.

With the petcock, you are depending on the packing nut to not leak fuel. Probably fine, but! Cheaper and more reliable solution to the problem of fuel draining during electric pump and/or associated filter change: I put a rubber fuel line service loop in front and back of the pump and filter. Use small vice grips to pinch both closed when changing pump or filter. Modern fuel line of course, double clamped.

dwick01..........I used a fuel line shut off valve from O'Reillys. I told them what the intended use was to be. I used the fittings so that I could push on the 3/8" rubber fuel lines and clamped them. No leaks and now no gas running down my arms when I change the filter. Can also be used for anti-theft.

Thanks for the info guys, I found an Airtex 8902 here in Canada. Ordered it should have it next week. Really like the idea of the shut-off valve. Will be looking for a spring loaded toggle switch. Again thanks everyone.

I installed an Airtex electric fuel pump on my '34 Ford a few weeks ago. Instead of a toggle switch I used a tiny 16 amp rated pushbutton immediate switch that I bought at a NAPA store. I like this better than the toggle switch because it almost invisable mounted on the lip of the dash.

I use the Airtex electric fuel pumps. Have em in both 6 and 12 volt vehicles. I convert the OEM fuel pumps to 'pass through', and use the electric pump as the only pump. I run a fuel pressure regulator set at 2.5 psi, as well as a 'kill switch' under the dash. that way everything looks stock under the hood and you don't have to worry about the OEM diaphragm failing.
