Default 1953 f-100 rear gears

thinking about changing the gear set in rear from 392 to 355 , any one out there do this swap ,the stock rear is a dana 44 so gear sets are common . this will make my merc flathead a little happier. thanks

That would be about a 10% reduction in RPM. If it was me I would see if I could borrow a couple tires the same 10% larger than what you currently are running just to verify the change was what all you hoped it would be.

running 235 75R on 7" vintique steel wheels now don't want to go through the whole wheel tire thing again they are all new , Im thinking the 355 gears would be more highway friendly.

OK just saying that if you try 3 inches taller tires it would be the same as 3.55 gears

If you could find someone that had a set you could try to see if you like it when I looked it up I was thing it drop you down 250 rpms

I am running 3:25 gears in a 9" Ford rear axle, merc engine, isky cam, 4 bolt Rochester carb, 235 75 16 radials. runs like a scadled dog on the highway, but around town if you get caught on a big hill you will wear the clutch out getting it going. had a 3:50--going back to it asap.

My 49 F1 originally had a 4.27:1 Dana 41 which I changed to a Dana 44 3.78:1. I recently rebuilt the Dana 41 with 3.55:1 gears. Running 6:50 16 tyres and 265 flattie, this feels to me like the best combination of cruise and grunt. I do have the heavy duty 3 speed box which has lower ratio 1st and 2nd gears. However it will still pull from standing using second gear without unduly slipping the clutch, so I don't think there would be an issue with a standard gear box.

I'm not sure which pinion seal you will need but it will likely have to mach up with the pinion you use. There were several seals used in the early 50s up into the early F100 pickups. You will also need to know if your differential carrier case will work for the ring gear. Randy's Worldwide should be able to help with this info.
