I am new here but I think there is a different answer betweent he people who have built a bunch of cars and the people who have done one. If you have done a bunch, yes it is just steel. If this was your dad's and it is the only one you built...no one touches it. I fail to see the need to put 20 miles on an antique going TO the church. Aren't they not supposed to see each other? Did she mean going to the reception? At most I would let them drive from a block away and arrive in it. After the kid had a few lessons.

A couple years ago, a friend of mine and I built a pretty close replica of the "BUG". We talked to Dick Kraft, quite a few times, during construction. He passed away about a year ago.

Thats a great rendition of "The Bug" I bet it is a blast to drive!

If I may respectfully inquire about one thing, for those of you that said NO to anyone else driving your car, why do you say it so emphatically? Is it because your vehicle is so valuable, or not insured, ---or something else?

Thanks.

.
For me; I respect my friends and family too much to let them drive something I own. If they messed it up in any way, I would be mad and hold that grudge forever. It may not be right to say that, but that is how I feel about it. So it's best to just say NO and hurt their feelings right now, rather than potentially lose their friendship, or family status forever.
After all it's MINE. Not anyone elses. Let them get their own if they like a Model A so much.

For my 2 cents, I read most of the fine print,(until I fell asleep), in my Grundy insurance binder and saw where NO "car games" at a public OR private car meet is allowed. Sounds like anybody unfamiliar with A's,driving near Newark is a real "Gymkanna"!! Better check---

You don't drive it very far - no radiator. It was built to drive 1/4 mile only. It sounds awesome !

Brent--
I didn't reply, but I would not be real keen on letting someone like that drive my nicely restored car either. Let's face it, many younger adults today have never even driven a stick shift car, much less a Model A with all of its quirks, etc. With their minds on the wedding and all else that is happening that day, I just think many of us feel you are asking for trouble. And what if they did somehow damage it......even though you have insurance, etc. they would then feel real bad plus you have to fix it or get it fixed, and most of us do not restore our cars for a living, so don't have access to the special equipment, etc. For many of us, owning one Model A is a treat and I guess we are just not enthused about having non-Model A folks drive them....especially if we are not even in the car with them.

If you tell them no then maybe you will lose them as friends......oh wait, that would be a good thing wouldn't it?

My grandfather drove me away at my (first) wedding. I asked him if we could use the car on the condition that he be the driver. He was stoked. Although the marriage went south (married young), it's still one of my favorite memories of him and the A.

My vote: yes, if you are the chauffeur.

Everyday we trust our lives and our cars to strangers on the road. Some people have had bad experiences lending stuff out and do not care to relive it. Others simply do not care or have a few more trusting friends. To each his own. It is your car, gun, wife, etc. to lend or not lend. Do what makes you feel comfortable. I will say though that there have been some interesting alternative compromises listed here. They may solve your delimma.

Hi Snowbird

This is 100% "the point" - Insensitives are no friends.
They (nervous that day anyway) should accept a chauffeur or buy their own.....

We used our own for our wedding.

I thought it was not running and you were waiting for parts for ignition. They are back ordered from China. You also need some money to pay the insurance because you do not insure it during the winter and it is an additional $1000.00. With Christmas coming you are a little hard up for cash because you are trying to provide a pole dancer some money for her childrens Christmas in the form of tips.

I just recently finished working on a beautiful 1931 Willys-Knight for an older gentleman. He wanted me to drive it in the Golden Days Parade in Fairbanks for him.
But when it came close to the day of the parade I found out he didn't have any insurance on the car, I asked him to get it, but he didn't want to pay the cost to insure it for just that parade(he only takes his cars out for this event).
I had the car all loaded and ready to go to town, but delivered it to his door instead. As much as I would have enjoyed it, I wasn't going to take the chance.
