Default Can paint be shipped

I would like to send a gallon of car paint to a friend but was told by fellow car members you cannot ship paint. Has anybody had any experience in shipping paint? I called UPS and FedEx but can not get thru to anyone who knows.

I think you can, but it can't go air, but haven't done it personally.

Now that I think about it, I think you just have to fill out an ORM-D form.

Yes,

You can ship it ground. Just be sure the lid is on tight and if you can find them, they make little clips to lock the lid in place.

I would place it inside a heavy plastic bag and seal it up the best you can and then place the can in a box, just a little larger then the can, that has crushed newspaper packed VERY tightly around it.

Place that box in another heavy plastic bag, seal it up and then pack it in a second box that is a little larger with crushed newspaper packed TIGHTLY around it.

It should arrive safely and if for some reason, you did pick up a leak, you have a couple of barriers to help contain everything. The main thing is to be sure the can is not just loosely packed in a box and is allowed to move around.

I have shipped paint and other heavy stuff that I did not want damaged in this manner with very good results.

That is what I would do,

Chris

For me the answer is NO! In order to ship to Alaska they want big bucks for hazmat fees. For a 8 oz spray can of Eastwood carb paint they wanted $100 shipping & hazmat fees. So I waited until someone was driving up. I got three cans, probably not enough. I get most of my paints from NAPA, price is a little higher, but i don't have the hassle.

Call these folks at Squeeg's Customs. Very, very nice people and quite helpful. I've ordered paint from them several times. They'll know the details of what you can do and what you can't.

Ask whoever you plan to use to ship it, they will tell you what you need to do.

Just put it in a plastic bag, then in a box and send it. Pack it good with lots a packing material for protection. Who knows what inside, they usually don't ask.

I shipped a gal of paint once, actually I went through the shipping dept of the company where my wife works. To insure the can didn't pop open if it was roughly handled, I cut two squares of 1/2" plywood, drilled all 4 corners and used some 1/4-20 all thread and bolted the plywood together with the gal can between them. No way it could pop open. The guy in shipping put it in a box and filled it full of foam peanuts. It got to where it was going OK and I think it went via UPS.

This is all good and well if everything goes OK,

BUT!!!!

It for some reason, something happens and it starts to leak outside the box and causes a problem, your name is on the box as the shipper. I would not want to be in the position of explaining why I did not declare what was inside, especially, if for some reason, it went by air. The Fed's DO NOT like this sort of thing.

It is just too easy to do it right.

MY OPINION,

Chris

You can buy gallons of paint on ebay, and it is shipped to you. That makes me think shipping is legal. You can always put a fake name on the return mailing address. Ha Ha Marv

Just about anything can be shipped legally as long as it is packaged per the regulations and that includes hazmat. Many things can not be shipped by air but just about anything can be shipped by ground means.

Most of the online paint distributors would be out of business if they couldn't ship their products - you just have to follow the rules and use your head.
