Just had a 1 3/4" straight pipe built for my car. It is too loud. Anyone have ideas for a louder than stock but quieter than nothing exhaust?

have a resonator welded in at some place on the exhaust. It will be louder than stock, but not ridiculous.

Smithy's muffler sold by Reds Headers and Jeggs are supposed to help performance and sound pretty mellow.

You can build a baffle or use a harley baffle. Although I think harley baffles are 2". Cut's it down to about 1/2 the noise. Both are not stock ford stuff though

I'll add, snyders has a stock looking performance muffler. Don't have any idea of the sound it produces but it's labeled louder then stock.

I've got a straight pipe - no baffles - on my speedster and while it sounds awesome when you are starting out, the noise seems to die down at road speed. Maybe I'm going faster than the sound's ability to keep up, but I doubt it... That's probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's my two cents worth.

That's the first time I've heard of a Model A going faster than the speed of sound!

What head compression and rear-end ratio you got on that baby!?...

Earle - If you're an older geezer (like me) and your hearing is not what it used to be, then a Model "A" going faster than the speed of sound is not an impossibility. FYI - we're running a stock head and rear end both on the Speedster and me!

I have a hopped up B motor, high compression head, Cam, dual 48 carbs, etc... the whole she-bang... header into a long Smithy muffler...
its not very loud and annoying, but you can tell its not stock... but still has a rumpity sound to it....

I removed the baffles from one of the Midas type mufflers that use to sell for $55.00. It is a little louder but looks original and makes a difference that you can feel in performance. Nobody notices the difference in the sound unless I tell them. I allways liked my cars to be a little louder anyway.

I used a baffle designed for Harley drag pipes. Sounds kind of funny at idle but great on the road. Thanks for all of the help.

I took a stock exhaust system, drilled a 3/8" hole where the tailpipe bent starts. Use a long sharpened rod to knock several holes in the baffles. Then you weld a small patch over the access hole. Sounds good.
