Default Speedometer Replacement

I just got a rebuilt speedo for my '28 Sport Coupe. My old one only went up to around 35 and the odometer and trip didn't work at all. When I replace this is there anything else I should look at? I'm assuming that lubing the speedo cable might be a good idea? Not knowing what the previous owner did, if he put grease in it instead of graphite, then what?

You could pull the inner cable out the top and inspect it. Then wipe it down and lube it with your graphite.

CatMan - Over the years I've had several speedo cables get worn, bent or break (not all in Model A's). As long as you've done the speedo I'd take the opportunity to look at the whole system:

  • Disconnect the cable from the tranny, pull out the carrier and inspect the gear for wear. Make sure you have the right gear for your rear end ratio and replace if necessary.
  • Replace the speedo cable. You're possibly dealing with a 90+ year old rotating object with unknown lubrication history.
  • Replace the rubber grommet on the firewall.

You're looking at well less than $50 in parts, and the hassle of doing this again in a couple of years when something fails makes doing it now on your schedule a reasonable investment in time.

But that's just my way of thinking. YMMV.
