It'll probably be replaced with one of those beautiful modern buildings such as Walmart or Home Depot. What is that architecture called......oh yeah, square. It's a shame to see works of art destroyed in the name of progress.

This is one in my area struggling to be preserved by a foundation of volunteers. It's a Texaco from 1930.

Binx,
Just curious what the assessed value is on that property. I always thought of owning one.

Some of these old gas stations might come with serious environmental cleanup price tags.

Think "old rusted-out in-ground gas tanks, spreading big VOC plumes into the local groundwater."

There was a glazed brick Standard station similar to Jonesy's in Indiana that you see in pictures, near our town. One day a backhoe showed up, before anyone could protest it was rubble..... now is an abandoned parking lot full of weeds. A local was in the process of buying it (It was not run down was in VERY good shape) the owner decided he wanted to sell used cars there.

I agree, this is a dirty shame to see these beauties destroyed

Wow what a loss. I often wonder if at some point people will realize that keeping such treasures will not only allow us to look back at our past but also allows people ro slow their life down when they stop to look at such a place.

It didn't come without a struggle but this 1921 Standard Station in Bowling Green KY was saved and restored.

We have 3 right here within 10 miles. People in this area seem to appreciate the value of keeping this kind of art around.

Newer photos suggest it may have been in such disrepair that it was not feasible to restore

Unfortunately preserving the past and protecting the future are not on the same page.
I have been involved with the ownership of several properties that way back in their past, had underground fuel storage tanks that predated my ownership of the property.
When I bought the properties there was no issue with underground contamination that may or may not have been caused by leaking fuel tanks which were never removed from the property..
Fast forward to the '80's/90's, enviromentalists went looking for possible contaminated sites which were resulting in contamination of ground water. Title searches and old records of fuel deliveries turned up properties that had been fuel stations, in some cases the service station had been torn down in the 1940's/50's with a newer building replacing it.. However, as it turned out the old tanks and contaminated soil was not removed..
I wont burden everyone with the huge costs that I incurred cleaning up the properties that were contaminated by someone else, prior to my ownership, I'll just say that we only have one "Earth" to live on, so we have to take care of what we have.

Maybe back then, 30 "pounds" of air really meant something. DD

in my travels around the country my eyes seem to gravitate toward old filling stations that are still standing ... ghosts of the past still looming inside my mind goes back to a time when people actually supported local businesses and our country wasn't driven by corporate greed
