That depends on which multi-disc flywheel you have, early or late ? Yes, with the later flywheel.

If your car has been converted to the single disc clutch & flywheel, that should work as well.

Jim,

Can you please elaborate on that? I had no idea there were two (2) Multi-disc flywheels.

Thanks.

Here are pictures of the two flywheels Tom W posted on the other site, said second type introduced about August 1928. Second type is on left.

Bob C, Thanks for the photos.

The second generation multi-disc flywheel was used with the introduction of the beefier 5/8ths Bendix starter.

So if you had a second generation multi-disc flywheel...could you still use the 1/2" drive starter?

However, you can't use the first generation M-DF with a 5/8" starter?

In other words:

First generation M-DF with 1/2" Starter drive...Yes
Second generation M-DF with 5/8" Starter drive...Yes
First generation M-DF with 5/8" starter drive...No???
Second generation M-DF with with 1/2" starter drive...Yes???

Interesting!

"Second generation M-DF w/ 1/2" starter drive, Yes ??"

A definite maybe.

Don't' over look the fact that the 1/2" starter required steel shims to correctly locate the drive in relationship to the flywheel ring gear.

You'll need the 5/8" starter, and everything from the flywheel to the U-joint, including the clutch and brake pedals.
Someone changed my 28 to the 5/8" starter, but someday I'll change it back to the original 1/2" now that I have all the parts.

JackS,

What starter is currently in the car ? What motor number ??

I'm suspecting my old friend Tom W. didn't completely understand your question. I don't see in the Service Bulletins where all those parts are needed to be changed when switching to a later starter. After June -July '28 it would have the later Bendix.

Yes. maybe a flywheel change....

Yes, I was thinking he wanted to change the clutch also. The only way to use a 5/8" drive with a multiplate flywheel is to make sure the outside diameter of the flywheel has the clearance cut for the larger drive. The "SERVICE DRIVE", which came out in August or September 1928 is still a 1/2" drive, and the starter needs to be modified as shown in the SERVICE BULLETINS. I'll have to see if the second style multiplate flywheel has the needed clearance for the 5/8" starter, but I can't do that for some time, as I'm busy with generators, and would have to dig out the flywheel from wherever it's stored.

Sounds like the easiest (hate to use the word) thing would be to get the second style of multi disk flywheel and once installed with the new starter, everything should work. Probably a lot of those flywheels around from people who switched to single disk clutch.

You should get a copy of the Service Bulletins. There s a section that describes the various bendix drives and their application. I have an Oct 28 Leaterback with the original special service drive and I cannot use the 5/8 inch starter. My multidisk clutch works great. If yours is functional I would not change it. Supergnat.

I agree, and have all the parts to put my 28 Phaeton back to the original multiplate.
I don't like to modify good original parts, but the first style multiplate flywheel can be turned for clearance. Just remember to always retard the spark, and the 1/2" starter should serve you well.

I also have a spare starter with the special drive just in case. I always move the spark lever to the up to the fully retarded position when I shut off my car. That way I am less likely to try to start it in the advanced position.

Bert's likely has parts or a complete 1/2" drive starter. I bought one from them a year ago.
