Default My 49 mercury water pump

Will 51 merc motor water pumps work on the 49? I have a donor 51 with the original flathead in tack and want to remove the water pumps and send to get rebuild then install in my 49 mercury and not have any downtime.

thanks in advance,

tom

No, the pulleys on '50 and '51 are narrow belt. (other than that the pumps are vertually the same)
You could transfer the whole '51 setup, crank pulley, fan and generator etc.

Early 49 Merc pumps were oiler type with bushings plus the wide sheeve as already mentioned. Later pumps will work on a 49 if you put the wide belt sheeves on. FoMoCo made a coversion kit to use the biscuit type mounts with the spacer adapters. The old block shaped mounts are more available now than they were back in the 60s.

Yes, the foot on a '49 Merc pump is different than the others. I was helping my buddy clean out some parts and was able to see them side-by-side. Clearly different and I think one year only.

Are you going to Hershey? If so, my buddy will have two sets there for sale. Pretty cheap I may add.

I have used these guys on several occasions and their work is top notch, very reasonable and, a quick turnaround. Call Tony and he will give you a run down on what they do. http://user.cavenet.com/tmac1/

I think the 49 merc pump mount is about 1" higher than later ones and also 8ba.

Can someone please post a photo of a 1949 and a 1951 Mercury water pump.
I always thought they were the same except for the pulleys. Thanks. Jim

The only major difference in the casting has to do with the type of bearing arrangement. The early 49 pumps have a spring loaded oiler cup and uses a bushing/bearing combo inside the housing. The later design has the sealed double row bearing/shaft assembly to fit. The sheaves were wide belt in 49 with single belt for both pumps then went to narrow double offset belt set up in 50. The tall square rubber block front mount was replaced with the biscuit type mounts that had to have an adapter to make up the hight dimension difference & alignment difference. The front frame cross member is different for the early 49 set up. The later 49/51 biscuit type mount with the big hole is located slightly offset from the single smaller bolt hole of the earlier 49 mount due to the size of the hole that was required to make the biscuit type work.

As far as I'm aware, there is no dimensional difference externally on the housing castings.

As stated the major difference is the pulleys with improvements to the bearings. And some of the late 51's had holes in the impellers supposedly to reduce cavitation.

These have narrow pulleys and an 0CM part #, I guess they are '50-'51 Merc?

If the 8CM pump has the hole for the oiler cup then it is an early 49 type. The OCM pumps were used through 1951 and had the sealed bearing/shaft assembly. Previous rebuilders may have converted the 8CM pump to the later configuration. Sometimes it is hard to tell the 8 from the 0 in the part number unless you beed blast them.
