1949 Mercury flathead water pump

it appears I have antifreeze leaking from the drivers side, I assume it is the water pump, my questions are:

1. Is Ford and Mercury water pumps the same?
2. Do I rebuild or buy new?

Bren,
Merc pumps are different from Ford where they mount to the chassis. I believe
there are at least 2 different styles. Someone on the Barn will know where you can get
a pump. In my area I rebuild them for local customers. I can tell you they don't
come apart as easy as the '37 - '48 style pump.

Here are some pictures of the Ford and Merc pumps. The '49-'51 Merc pump bodies are basically the same except the '49 Merc had wide belt pulleys, while '50-'51s used narrow belts.
I don't have any '49 Ford car pumps to show (same as '53 trucks) but they are the same as the '50-'53 except for wide belt pulleys.

What Old Henry says....$200 is mucho reasonable especially
if you get 'George Mitchell' impellers....Skip is the way I'd go for sure.

I made a tool out of an old impeller to press the seal in to the correct dimensions. There are rebuild instructions on the flathead techno-source site titled "49 - 53 waterpump rebuild by Dave O'Neil". http://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/flathead.htm They are a pain to rebuild but the kits are around 25 bucks if you have the tools & equipment to do the job.
