Window regulator stop
This is my first post, I have a 1936 4 door sedan. The front passenger side door glass cranked down to the point it fell to the bottom of the door and broke the glass. I have the regulator out and it looks like the gear on the right (looking at it from the inside) has two (2) holes where maybe a stop of some sort should be. What stops the window crank from moving the glass too far down to the point the track falls to the bottom of the door? If there is a stop of some sort that goes in those two (2) holes what does it look like? thanking you in advance!

Re: Window regulator stop
Yes, there are studs, for the lack of a better term, that go in the regulator to keep it from going down to far. I think most old Ford vendors have them.

Re: Window regulator stop
On a 39 there is a 5/8" hex shaped piece of brass about 1/2" thick that is drilled off center so it can be indexed so the end of the gear hitting it can be adjusted for the down position. The upper limit has a screw for a stop. I just did one that one window would not go up enough so I made the screw a little shorter and put a tapper on the screw so I could get it stopped where I wanted. G.M.

Re: Window regulator stop
There may have been a couple of different ones. I have seen the 1/2" hex yellow brass, 1/2" long with an offset 10-32 screw through hole for a slotted round head 10-32 steel machine screw with a lock washer. Also a machined steel round piece with a 10-32 stud on one side, held in place by a 10-32 hex nut and lock washer. The steel one is pictured in the 38 Ford hardware book as 40-702730-B for:
40-700, 720, 730, 740,760, 770 48-700, 720, 730, 770, 780 and 68-700, 730, 770, 780 If your car body style is listed above get the steel stop, otherwise get the brass. The 38 hardware book does not list any of the parts for later than 38. |

Re: Window regulator stop
One of my customers couldn't find a source for the window stops used on his 1934 Ford, so we made some for him. These are the round type with a 10-32 stud which we made out of stainless (part #9-4000 for a pair). I think these were used from 1932 thru 1938 - I would like to know the correct year range.

Re: Window regulator stop
Look in the bottom of the door. The original part may have come out and dropped to the door bottom.

Re: Window regulator stop
I had the exact same thing happen! I found mine (the stop) in the bottom of the door. I then had to replace the glass, that is fun fun too. It is very important to get the window channel (or whatever the "U" shaped piece is called) that clamps the glass at the bottom edge in the right position, measure it before taking it off the old broken glass.

Re: Window regulator stop
I can't comment on later years, but the 32 closed cars used a triangular shaped brace with a rubber channel shaped stop riveted for the bottom stop. The 32 cabriolets used a special formed steel bracket held to the inner door panel with crimped "d" nuts for the up stops. never saw any special hex shaped eccenteic stops on 32's. However I believe 35-36 had them on the bolt in window lift regulators.
