Default split or solid valve guides

I am in the middle of rebuilding a 39 221 v8 and have one chipped valve. The engine has the mushroom split valves, do I have to stick w/ these or can I replace all the valves w/ a solid valve kit??? What's the advantages of one over the other???

You can go with straight stem valves and one piece guides. Easier to assemble and disassemble. Lower cost valves more readily available especially if you use chevy valves. JMO

go with the straight stem valve, as was stated they are easier ti work with, chevy valves are longer, great if your using a reground cam and adjustables (which i dont like or recomend) original ford intake valves have an indentation on top of the valve, exhaust valve heads are flat

The biggest advantage of using the later valves and lifters in a rebuilt early engine is the better oil control and sealing of the later guides. If you plan on going through with this change use 52-53 valves springs and rotators, this will improve longevity and better sealing of the valves.

If you already got most of those suckers out without destroying them --- and money is an object like with me --- I'd prolly try hard to put as many of them back together as I could without replacing them all. It doesn't really bother me that one of my valve assemblies doesn't match the other 15. And my 21-studder doesn't seem to mind either ---- yet. 8^)
