Re: Replacement Fan
It's the same metal as the Brits call it AL-U-MIN-UM.

Re: Replacement Fan
Hi Guys,
After reading about all the taper issues you brought up. Thank you very much. I went to a nearby parts store with my water pump and fitted the hub assembly of the new one on the shaft with no woodruff key. He hub fit really tight and felt seated on the shaft with no wobble. I also noticed that there was enough threads to not bottom the nut. I put a on new woodruff key tightened the hub with the nut and cotter pin. Added the blades and we will see what happens. It was very helpful to learn about shaft taper. Since I tried 2 fans supposed to be good that would not stay tight. Thanks for all your advice and help. I believe I cured my problem, I let you all know how it goes. Richard |

Re: Replacement Fan
I had problems with fitting a new aluminum fan to 3 different waterpump shafts, all new, a couple years ago. One was on a rebuilt waterpump, the others were just replacement shafts. The tapers were different enough that the fan would rock to some extent on each shaft. I eventually went with pumps from James Rupert for both of my A's, the aluminum fan fit to shaft was good. I regularly check to see that it is tight on the tudor when the hood is up, no problems so far. The pickup is still not running, but hopefully I'll be able to yard drive it before the snow flies around here.
I mention this because it should be pointed out somewhere in this thread that you shouldn't assume the taper on your water pump shaft is correct and the fan isn't. There could be a problem with either one, or both. With repro parts I assume everything is junk and work my way up from there. :-) -DAN |

Re: Replacement Fan
My coupe came with the four blades bolted on. Didn't like the looks so removed one blade. Three years later all is well and have had no problems what so ever
Sewall I do check the bolts every once and awhile. |

Re: Replacement Fan
All you need to do is sound out the letters in the word. ALUMINIUM! Al-you-min-ium. It's easy, if you spell it correctly in the first place

Re: Replacement Fan
When installing the aluminum fan, put a steel washer under the nut.

Re: Replacement Fan
I believe Snyders is the only manufacturer of the aluminum fans. They have been on the market for maybe 15 years?? There were some initial problems with the fans however they have been fixed. I haven't heard or experienced any problems with the fans they have been making for the past ten years. Unless your buying an early "NOS" Snyders fan from a vender who doesn't sell much the fan should have no problems.

Re: Replacement Fan
The only problem with this is that NO ONE has them in stock right now and won't until January 2016. I tried 6-7 different vendors - all the usual suspects - none.

Re: Replacement Fan
I don't understand this, john lavoy ran a test on the fans and found that the two blade fan cooled every bit as good as the plastic 6 blade or the 4 blade in most cases. The advantages of the 6 blade is not relevant. Therefore go with the 2 blade an keep the car looking like an 80+ year old car.

Re: Replacement Fan
We did an investigation on the taper of the shaft and fan hubs. The problem wasn't with the parts it is the fit of the woodruff key. To make sure the key is the correct height put the fan on the shaft without the key. You can now feel if there is any wobble etc. and see how far the fan goes onto the shaft. Mark that spot with a pencil or marker. Remove the fan put the woodruff key on and reinstall the fan. If you don't get back to your mark your problem is with the fit of the key. Once you get that fitted into the slot or indent in the shaft your fan will seat properly and you won't have a wobble on the fan.
