Default thread dope

What kind of thread dope should be used on oil filter lines? First attempt the compression lines leaked bad, switching to rubber lines and thinking of using teflon tape.

teflon tape is good, teflon paste in a tube is better--make sure none of it gets into the oil system

Teflon tape should only be used on pipe threads, they're tapered... Any flared end type fitting arrangement should not need pipe dope, and Teflon tape is not the thing to use on straight threads

Teflon tape on oil fittings,be careful make sure that no Teflon tape extends beyond the threads on the fitting, the tails of the tape will be free to wander in your oil system and end up blocking flow to a bearing,or some other place where it can cause real problems.I under stand that Teflon tape is never used in aircraft applications because of this problem.I personally prefer the non hardening permatex.Phil

There is a Cemical plant near here that they inspect each & every vehicle as it comes through the gate no matter how many times you went back & forth.
At the time there was construction and our trucks were back & forth many times each day.
They were checking for Matches / lighters & Teflon tape.
Story goes they had some teflon tape get lodged in one of the pipes from improper instalation & I guess there was A explosion or fire caused by the pluged line.

Karl is 100% correct.
I might add that you need to be careful with rubber lines as not all are impervious to oils and their respective additives.
My advice? Practice your flares until you "get it right" so as to avoid any issues when out on the road.

I can recommend two Loctite products. The first is Loctite 569, Item No. 56931, Thread Sealant. The second is Loctite 545, Item No. 54531, Pneumatic/Hydraulic Seal. They are removable, non-migrating and best of all when used on hydraulic parts they are non-fouling like a small piece of Teflon tape can be. If it is a flare you are talking about you might think about re doing the flare. A small piece of loose Teflon tape can cause all sorts of problems.

It's a puralator from the 30's. The hose I was going to use is bulk 5/16 fuel line. Thanks for the info about teflon getting into the oil channels, I was more worried about teflon breaking down from the oil and heat.
