1940 Column drop/lock... What am i missing?
I'm rebuilding the column drop for my 40, and it had already been partially disassembled, so I'm not sure what it needs.
I have ordered a new lock and key, as well as a chrome switch lever and an endcap. It looks like there is something that slides into the slotted part of the column lock barrel that keeps the switch locked when the column is locked, and then when the column is unlocked, it frees up the switch. Also, is there something besides a bolt that screws in under the switch besides a screw? It looks like it might be something spring loaded to keep the switch in the "ON" position. What you see in this picture is all I have. |

Sorry But The Only Thing Recognize As A 40 Is The Housing.

Once you get the correct lock cylinder, you will find that it engages the slotted area on the coincidental lock/plunger and by rotating the cylinder with the key, you will be able to slide the plunger laterally in the housing. You also need to buy the spring, ball bearing and nickel plated brass "screw" which retains ball etc. The ball will press against the detents on the lock ring you all ready have. Get a hold of Roy Naciewiz (SP) at Fordbolts.com. Maybe someone else here can supply his #, correct website address etc.

You are missing the switch parts and the ball detent parts. There is a small ball, spring and cap that holds the lever in position. The switch has a metal bottom, contact and a terminal plate.

I have attached herein three photos that hopefully may help you.
Beneath that chrome plated screw on the bottom of the mechanism is a washer, spring and check ball. That's what keeps the lever in the position of choice. You may also note that flat piece sandwiched in the slot of the operating shaft. It appears you are absent that piece as well.
