Default Front -Spring-Squeaking

Hi,
My front-spring squeaks strong. What is better. Teflon tape between the leaves or anything reap good with Graphite-Lube. Or does anyone have a better advice.
If I remove the spring already, I should better buy a new spring? On the front, the car is relatively low. I think the springs are somewhat waned over the years.

A5310A Snyders = 130 Bucks.
A5310A Macs =99 Bucks.
What is the difference?

Greetings Barney

I like to sandblast the springs, grind away any ridges from wear in the spring leaves, round off the lower edge where it rubs the next leaf down, paint, and then coat the leaves with Mystik JT-6 and sprinkle graphite on the grease. I then use spring covers to help keep the grease in and dirt out.

If your spring is too worn or sagging then I'd buy a new one. I'm not sure of the difference in Snyder's and Mac's, but I know Little Dearborn in Mpls., MN makes a lot of the front springs.

I do basically the same as Tom but also check the arch against the drawings such as shown in the Bratton's catalog. It is possible to re-arch the spring. I use a product called "Slip-Plate" between the leaves. Your local John-Deere agency has a similar paint. Be sure the top leaf of the spring has a "bevel" on the top side to fit correctly into the cross member.

Is it the spring or something else squeaking ?? Like maybe the spring is loose and squeaking against the crossmember?? Or the shackles ?? What the fellas said is true and the way to fix the spring itself,, but,, if you don't want to remove it then maybe some grease between the leaves shot thru a grease needle will help..

I am with Patrick L. Check other places first. I had squeaking around the hood shelves at one time that could have been confused with a spring squeak.

In addition to the above suggestions, all of which are good, if the spring is a repro, and the top leaf edges were not beveled, the edges will cut into the cross member, causing squeaks. In worst cases, the cross member will crack from these stress points. Dry shackles will squeak too.

Has anyone used a Dry Film Lube on the spring leaves? I have used it on many things where metal to metal contact can be a problem and it works better than liquid lube in many situations. For example, my shotgun, pistons prior to assembly, and aluminum threads.

Starting July 1929,the starting crank brg#A-5461 has a 5/16"hole thru the lower part of the brg so that you can squirt oil down the hole to lube the sides of the spring to prevent squeaks.Page 360 of Service bulletins.

NAPA makes two graphite products in a spray can, one is liquid the other is a "dry" graphite. I have used both on my springs, front and back. It got rid of a lot of the squeeks.

ColumbiA, thanks for the tip on the hole in the crank bearing. I was not aware of that one.
