40 ford brakes

I am installing a vac. brake booster and a master cylinder in my car. The master cylinder is a chevy setup from speedway. do I need a proportional valve in the rear brake lines?

If your running stock drum brakes on both front and rear, no. If you have disc brakes in the front - yes.

Make sure the master cylinder is for drum brakes only and not disc/drum.

To add to the above post: if you do have a MC for disc brakes in the front, you will need to add a 10 pound residual pressure valve to the lines front and rear.

Residual valves were used and needed on all drum brakes up to the mid '70s, regardless of master cylinder location.

The uint was given to me. I will check with Speedway and see what it is designed for. I have original drums and brake cylinders.

If its the unit Im thinking of I don't know how you are going to make it fit unless you have an auto. I dare say its going to be a 1" bore job so all sorts of things can happen .. possibly like your foot is going to hit the floor if one circuit fails anyway.

It that case, with original brakes, you have no need for all that stuff. Properly setup '40 brakes will get you tucked right up a little too close to the windshield if you stomp on them to hard. If you need to redo the brakes, use old time brake linings, riveted to the shoes. The new bonded shoes/linings do not stop worth a darn compared to the old linings. Don't replace the wheel cylinders unless they are junk. Lightly hone the original wheel cylinders, and install new cups and expanders. Properly adjusted you will excellent brakes. If you do decide to buy new wheel cylinders, let me know, and I will buy your old ones. Guys like Ray Helgers in RI and Fred Wilner in MN will likely have the good old linings and rivets.

Have not tried these but seems the way to go when the originals are to far gone for just a light honing.

OK . The part number is 910-31974 and it is for a 58 thru 64 Chevy ,drum /drum.
