possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Any interest in another restoration thread? This one is a '40 convertible I'd started on a few weeks ago.
This one is going to take a while

Uh, duh...of course we're interested. Build threads are one of the great things to come out of forums like this because we all can learn more.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Not yet, so far he's between Cloudmist Gray and Folkstone Gray. As you could see from the photo I'd posted, we're a ways off from color choice.
This is going to be a very fun project for me in that it will be my first non-original go. For the most part, it'll be '40 Ford with some 1950's touches. The ultimate goal is very tasteful and not something you have all seen a hundred times before.

Man, THIS is beginning to sound juicy, even for a "Kube" presentation. Can ya give us a 'heads-up' with regard to some of these '50s "touches"? Early Caddy, maybe? I've already got loads of popcorn on hand in anticipation of this one. Thanks for sharing what you do so well with the 'peanut gallery'! DD

I'm anxious too! Who doesn't love a convertible, and a 40? No mystery to many of you that the non original part won't ruffle my feathers. Mustang 2 front? Just kidding Kube. Can't wait to watch this one.

You guys are hilarious. Thanks for putting a well needed smile on this ugly mug of mine.
Still attempting to nail down the exact specs. So far, it's sounding to be a very tasteful build. NO modern poopy and NO billet. Just subtle little things that a guy will have t look twice, three times to notice. Remember I'm just the cook on this project. My boss provides the recipe.

Absolutely. I'm interested in everything as well. In particular I'm interested in how you brace the body when you remove it from the frame. A great tutorial.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Had a 40 conv. when I was i the navy. It was a " moon shiners" car amd had been Rolled. The right side windshield post was bent an straightened with a come along, I think. Door didn't work very well either. Paid 50 bucks and it had one hell on an engine in it..

Great Picture's. Just curious, did you weld the frame to the actual body of the car? An inquiring mind wants to know. You certainly couldn't have had any movement with that structure.

^^ There's no difference, but it's a bigger motor than the 40 motor, so maybe that's the point.

As Mart said....
DD, I'm sure you know... 59A (46-48) breaks down to "5" for the year it was released for production (1945), and to "9", meaning a Merc part number. So... what Mart said. And, I know you already know all this useless info. Grin |

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Hey bobH and Mart.....Yeah guys, I do KNOW! That's why I stuck the popcorn in the post. Yet, my point was to bring attention to the past 70 years or so of guys finding the need to embellish their ride's status by making note that their engine was a '48 Merc, like the Merc (in the case of THIS time period) was somehow superior to a '46, '47 or '48 FORD engine. It would be difficult to find more than a mere handful of flathead-powered hot rods or customs in the MANY magazines published in the '50s and early '60s that weren't "equipped" with the requisite '48 Merc mill! Thinking further about it, there must have been one hell of a lot of worthless, engineless 1948 Mercury carcasses sitting around in fields and junkyards. Thanks, you's two! DD

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
This one is going to seemingly go slow. Whoever did the old work that was beneath the flat black primer did not own a measuring device of any sort.
Thus, this one is going to require "bouncing around" a bit to get all the pieces to fit well together. I now have the floor completely removed from the body. I drill out the factory spot welds and use the exact holes upon reassembly. This one is odd in that there were more spot welds on one side than I'd ever witnessed on any '39 or '40 I've restored. Makes me think a "Monday" car I will replace the rear pan. It's on there still to provide a little rigidity needed for the time being. There was literally 3/4" of bondo over the rear pan. I have no idea why as the pan is actually quite solid. There was in fact a gross amount of bondo over the entire car. If I didn't know better, I'd bet this was a Boyd Coddington car at one time. He was known for the HUGE amounts of putty applied with a trowel.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Maybe, it was a shift or operator change and that side got welded twice.
Kube, two questions, do you plan to repair the existing floor and reinstall it? What is you preferred tool to drill out the spot welds? I tried one of the HF spot weld tools and it is not all that great. It needs more than a center punch mark to keep it from wandering around. Thanks, Zeke |

Someone had installed a floor pan from a sedan in to this car, so yes, it will be completely replaced. I have it fairly close now but won't do any more than tack it until I have the doors fit. I use spot weld cutters from SnapOn. I'm not a huge SnapOn fan as I believe they are over priced for the most part. However, their cutters have proven to me anyway, to be worth the cost.

Mike. Coincidental that you're doing a 40 convert. I love 40s and have a restored coupe and pickup besides my convertible. Mine is in about the same state of restoration as yours. I've been waiting for the 40 book to come out, so I can proceed. In the meantime any info you post here will be greatly appreciated. I have some extra parts, and may need a few conv. only parts, so please keep in touch....mike

This is my forth '40 convertible so i have a pretty good idea what needs to be done. Unfortunately this one has been bastardized by someone in the past. I'll figure it out and in the process lose a few more hairs. Oh, the book should be available in late January. That's what I hear...

[QUOTE=V8COOPMAN;1964851]Man, if ever there was a guy that can speak FIRST-HAND to "very tasteful build", or "subtle little things that a guy will have to look twice, three times to notice", it would be "Peter C" humbly referencing his unprecedented '35 Ford 3-window. This car truly has subtle touches and minute details throughout the package that have been so tastefully planned and executed, that only the true connoisseurs that understand the legendary world of old Ford "Holy Grail" can begin to appreciate. There is, however, one slight departure from "subtle" in this car, and that is in the engine room. What a magnificent package! DD
........[/QUOT That is purdy.

This car is causing me fits. It will get done and it will get done to my standards.. Will I have any hair remaining to pull out at that time? Doubtful. This car as received had been cut, welded, pounded on... you name it, it was done. The real problem is that whomever did the cutting, pounding, etc. had zero idea of how to measure. Today, the first attempt to fit the trunk lid yields the fact that the rear quarters were installed too high. Well, not the entire rear quarter, just the "top half" - above the stainless molding line. Fortunately it took only about two hours to get the right side close to where I want it. Tomorrow I'll deal with the left side. All in all, this car is coming together and yes, it feels good to save another '40. But at the cost of my hair???

Hair is over rated. Kojak and Yul Brynner did OK without it.
It's all worth it for the rest of us. |

I don't know! Accorging to this picture, there seems to be plenty to yank-on!! This '40, NO DOUBT, will turn heads just like all other "Kube Cars" end up doing. Keep on pullin'! DD |

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
The third trunk lid from Carpenter arrived today and miracle be, it was not damaged.
I'd mentioned early on in this thread that there will be some little modifications done to this car in the late 50's - early 60's style. Here's one...

My fault... I should not have assumed everyone would know. I've attached a photo here of the very first convertible I'd done (circa 1980ish) for comparison.

Just a question but did Ford stamp all the sheetmetal by 40?

To my knowledge, at least all the passenger car sheet metal was produced by Ford. I can't speak to trucks.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Major surgery began yesterday. The top of the cowl had been replaced in the past with a mix of '39 & '40 parts. The workmanship was some of the worst I'd ever seen.
I was able to source a '38 upper cowl in CA. There are some differences that I'll need to overcome but I'm glad to have acquired this piece.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Definitely earning my keep on this project.
The replacement cowl / windshield section I'd acquired is a '38. Enough differences to necessitate some surgery. Need to install the '40 back up plates for the top bow clamp parts as well as swap the cowl vent sheet metal. That part I hadn't realized was different than '40. Live and learn This replacement cowl is rust free but had not been treated nicely in storage. Lots of dings - some fairly major. All in all, I'm glad to have it.

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
After removing thousands of spot welds, you get really good at it!!
While the owner will have about the same amount of money in it in the end, at least he is having you fix a car with major problems instead of buying a nice one to start with to modify. You are DEFINITELY earning your money on this. |

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
Huge indeed. 90% of the cars in primer are that way because the owner can't do or won't pay for what it takes to put shiny paint on the car. Especially black or dark colors. Certainly any of your jobs could easily be painted black.

The owner, a VERY wonderful person, had wanted a coupe "like I had in high school". I'd explained to him it would probably be nicer than the one he had decades ago. He'd given me perhaps the second nicest "donor" coupe I'd ever worked with. Blocking that car out was a tiring, tedious task. However, regardless of the angle the car was inspected, there were NO waves anywhere. Anyway, a long story - shortened.... the very same day I'd completed that restoration, I had called Passport Transportation to ferry the car to the owner in TX. There was not even a hint of a dust scratch in that car. I did not want one to occur when the car was in my "watch".

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
wondering... Seems like there is not much left of the original body tub. Mike mentions lack of measuring, no need to brace (nothing to brace), complete floor replace, rear pan, quarters too high, trunk lid from Carpenter, and most recently, the upper cowl and w/s section. So, what's left of the donor body tub? Seems like not much. With Mike's talent, seems like he could just as well started with miscellaneous (swap-meet) panels. Am I out-to-lunch again?
(Which reminds me... whatever happened to the 40 panels that Drake started, and later went to Carpenter (I think)?) Last edited by bobH; 04-22-2021 at 02:01 PM. |

It certainly is appropriate in Mike's case, but it's hard to appreciate until you see it full size. Mikey is the one whanging that top back into shape with the BIG body hammer! DD |

Re: possible interest in another new restoration project? '40 convertible
My best guess in regard to the cowl section I'd got out of CA. is the left door was open on this car and backed in to something quite forcibly.
The "post" is bent and and as such, well, check the photos. Argghh!

Man, that is some serious surgery there. Are you planning to reuse the piece you have cut out or do you need a new donor part?
Thanks for sharing the details on this repair/restoration. |
