Is it the buying season?
Had two people drive by and noticed Larry's Fordor in my garage today and wanted to buy it. Is this common?

Just people that want a closer look! In reality not serious buyers. Everybody likes looking at olde cars. Wayne

Re: Is it the buying season?
after people watch Pickers and Antiques road show, they think everyone is giving everything away for free..........
that's my take. the next time, ask them what they want to pay................ probably get some mumbling and I'll get back to you. |

Re: Is it the buying season?
It would have been all up to Larry....seems two people in one day for Bart and no one ever stopped for Sarah.

No worry Larry, whoever breaks into the garage to steal Bart had best bring another carburetor, I took yours off....................

there always is "stealth" mode
when the thieves roll it out of the garage in the middle of the night and onto a trailer, just up the road................ |

Re: Is it the buying season?
Somebody told me years ago that if you want to sell an old car, park it somewhere with just a part of it showing.Tucked in the bushes, behind a house, kind of in a spot where somebody will drive by and a passenger will holler, did you see that old car in the bushes?I park one of my cars in a shed at another home I own about 3 miles from me.The shed is on the side of an old state highway, and if I'm there working on something I will leave half of the door open.3 or 4 people will spot it and stop, most want to buy that old junk car to build a hot rod out of.I've never had any interest in selling it outright, but if somebody stepped up to the plate I would sell it.I had a Worthington tractor I wanted to sell,it had the 32 Ford grill, hood, and partial cowl on it.I advertised it,and got a few calls, but when I tucked it in the bushes a couple of hundred feet down my driveway folks poured in when they spotted that grill shell.

And people will become even more interested if you tell them " this car is not for sale to anyone at any price".

Re: Is it the buying season?
I had some stationary engines inside a locked barn, and got a call from some guy in Iowa wanting to know if I would sell them? I should have taken his information because later they were stolen.

Well, he knew where he could get them since you didn't want to sell them!

Re: Is it the buying season?
I also get a lot of calls from people looking at ads I have out,but not for the item in the picture. They will ask about stuff in the background.I took a picture of an old Lincoln lube station, the thing was 9 feet long, and had three oil and grease barrels inside of it.There were a couple of Eco air meters in the background,I got a dozen calls about those. It was one of those calls that sold those meters, even though I had not planned on selling them right off.He was a restorer of them, and made a good offer and bought all 10 of them at once.

Re: Is it the buying season?
That visibility can work the other way as well. A fellow that had an accumulation of parts and cars once told me that he came by most all of it from people contacting him first. His daily driver was a Model-A sedan and he found that a number people would stop in public places to report a stash of parts or whole cars that they had acquired through purchase of a property or because they were disposing of a relative's estate. None of this stuff was ever advertised and he was the only person offered. I was amazed at what was simply given to him free, provided he hauled it away. In some cases, he had to haul away other non-Ford junk, but did so gladly in order to get the good stuff.

Re: Is it the buying season?
Put it out on the street with a FREE sign on it.
Everyone will ask what's wrong with it ?... and walk off. Put a FOR SALE sign on it and it will get stolen the first night. |

Re: Is it the buying season?
Next time someone offers to buy your "A" and ask how much, point to the left running board and say, "Start stacking $100.00 bills here and I will tell you when to stop. That will most probably end that conversation. jiml...

Re: Is it the buying season?
Years ago I was working on a 1931 Hudson Boatail roadster in the driveway. I'd be working away and there'd be 1/2 dozen people watching what I was doing and asking questions. One guy even asked my wife for a coffee!! 30's cars just draw people's attention and gets them dreaming.

Re: Is it the buying season?
In post # 17 I talked about an old VW van that we had used at one time for a school bus stop. It was parked beside the front of our about 500' long driveway. People would come to the house and ask how much was I asking for the van, I told them it wasn't for sale. Then they would ask why is it parked up by the road. So I painted SCHOOL BUS STOP on both sides of it in LARGE letters, people still came and asked how much. I told one guy $10,000, he nearly freaked out. A couple of years later we moved to a small village and took the van w/us and the kids used it for a play house. The SCHOOL BUS STOP painting was still on it when I sold it.

We had that "uphill walk" about a mile just to get to and from the bus stop.
