Default Interesting 6 volt generator fact

Hi gents...thought I would relay this to all:
I recently bought a Ford armature at a swap meet...looked nos. I was in need of a long style armature typically seen on 38's and 39's with a radio. This part has a keyway somewhat downstream of the threads. Supports a pulley with a fan, approximately 1/2" longer than your regular armature. WOW I just hit a 75 year old homerun...yeah right!
Turns out that the commutator was about 3/16" longer than "standard" and the field portion about the same although the overall length was pretty much spot on! Sooo I put this beast together and proceeded to smoke two new regulators and three used ones. As soon as the regulator (s) warmed up the amp gauge would go off the charts. This thing would make 18 volts +. I could keep it at 10 or 12 by running the headlights and radio...the solution, after three weeks of frustration, was to build a proper length armature by "piecing" together two normal armature shafts!
Note the beast finally threw all of the lead out of it!
Believe me I was not talented enough to adjust the various regulators to handle the "beast" output volts...
