40-2454 Pedal Pad Evolution
As a followup to the previous posting on the subject, Here is a more detailed discussion of the subject.
The 40-2454 Clutch and brake pedal pad was used from late 1933 through mid 1936 without change (see Fig A). These original design pads were assembled to the pedal without a lock washer and tightened on the ¼” pipe taper thread. There must have been an issue with this design staying firmly tightened on the pedal because in mid 1936 the pad was redesigned to have a longer threaded stud (.55” to .66”) (See fig B) This longer stud allowed the use of a lockwasher (34810-S2) to help secure the pedal pad to the pedal. (See fig D). The newer design pad also had two recessed holes to facilitate the use of a special wrench designed to help tightened the pedal pad to the pedal (See fig 144). It was suggested in future service bulletins that the washer be used on previous pedal pad installations to provide a tighter and more permanent assembly(See fig C) |

Suspect that if Henry had 'Locktite' available he would not have wasted the money on installing spanner wrench holes and adding a lock washer or making the stud longer.

Re: 40-2454 Pedal Pad Evolution
The brake pedal was slowly unscrewing on my newly built 32. (converted to pipe threads). It gave the impression that the brakes were getting better as the pedal was higher. Until it wobbled as it was near the end of the thread. luckily I realised what was happening and was able to tighten it before it fell off. Something to look out for.

Don,
Was my recollection (in the other thread) correct about the pedal pad change more or less coinciding with the release of the short brake pedal? Dave |

Re: 40-2454 Pedal Pad Evolution
Dave, I believe that the "17" wedge and pedal did not show up until late in 1936. The Feb 1936 and July 1936 Chassis Parts list does not show the 68-2050 wedge or 68-2455-A pedal. They do appear in the Nov 1936 Chassis Parts price list however.
