Default Here it is, '28 Coupe, thoughts? Suggestions?

I rolled it out of the barn this morning and took a bunch of pictures. First just a quick look at the outside.

From what I have gleaned, this vehicle was built from many vehicles. It doesn't sound like it was a "Special" when it started out. At first He wanted to build a Business Coupe, then decided on the "Special"

Oh, I did get Les Andrews' Vol. 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now the engine. At first glance, it needs a coil wire. A concern I have is the white powder. Last year while road testing, it got a little warm. Not sure what it was that caused it. Drove it the next day and it didn't get hot.

Please let me know what you see that I need to address. Suggestion on where to get a coil wire?

Looks to me like you have a head gasket leaking. Personally I would put the side pans back in also, some folks like them some not, I do, as it seems to keep things cleaner, and I think it helps with airflow

I will look around for those side pans.

Yeah, looks that way, head gasket. I'll need to look around the barn and see what there is for this motor.

Thanks for the input!

2liv, give that engine bay a good scrubbing before you jump at pulling the head. Clean her up with some degreaser, tooth brush and follow up with hot soapy water. Dry it all of and fire it up and get it up to operating temperature. While shes idling take a visual and see what you can see. The white powder looks like some kind of reaction between the outside surface of the gasket and what ever else that was near by the engine. Shut her down and do a retorque of the cylinder head following the correct sequence. Might be all she needs besides a repaint. The tops on the Bus. and Sports are pretty different from the "Special" coupes, yours looks like a Special to me, and a great start!

Farrell, Thanks for the tips.

As soon as I can get her running I'll get it cleaned up for sure.

Do you know if a special coil wire has to be used? Or can I have one made at a local parts house?

You should check out these vendors - and there are more

http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/modelaparts

http://www.mikes-afordable.com/

http://www.brattons.com/default.asp?cookiecheck=yes&

http://www.modelastore.com/

but I think a coil wire is a coil wire - as long as it is long enough and size you should be able to go to NAPA and get one in a pinch

Thanks Mark. I'll run to town in a little while and see what they can do for me. I read (been doing that a lot lately!) where it is best to run a solid coil wire and not a modern carbon one.

I have a Snyder's catalog in my hand, and looking there.

As Mark mentioned I'd order a coil wire from the Model A vendors if you have other parts or books that need to be ordered at the same time. If you buy one locally then make sure it's solid wire. Actually any wire will work as long as it doesn't fall out of the coil or cap. Just to fire it up you could even take a piece of old wire, bare the ends, then use a small piece of cardboard to stuff in with the wire to hold the wire ends in place.

To Tom's comment, I saw a guy at a show with a "rat rod" A who made barbed wire it looked like out of 12-2 wire and used that for his connections. I didn't notice how he had it jammed in there, but it had character at least and he drove it there.

Got a coathanger :-) ... kidding

You have a Model A parts dealer right in Ridgefield. It's Floyd's Model A Parts, and is run by Janet Hickel, Floyd's widow. They built this business together and she knows her stuff and carries nearly everything. I always go to her first, and if she doesn't have it, which is rare, I turn to Snyder's or Bratton's or others. The convenience of just running over and getting what you need is pretty nice, rather than waiting a week for a part to arrive, and she's close to Vancouver (29500 NW 31st Ave, Ridgefield). I encourage you to call Janet and get to know her. She will be a valuable resource for you as you get your car where you want it.

Her number is 360-887-8341. She works out of her house and you may be a little surprised as you walk up. She also has a big travel rig she takes to meets. She will have the proper coil wire for you.

I will see what I can find.

Snyder's doesn't show a coil wire in their catalog, at least what I can see. I'll give them a call.

Thanks Folks.

As for other books, there are a couple more I need to order!

Amdriven,

Beautiful car ! I wish mine looked as nice ( see my avatar ).

Looks like you a a model 49-A Special Coupe, which replaced the 45-A "Standard Coupe" ( steel back ) from June 1928 through June/July 1929.

Good advice from all above - Farrell in Vancouver should be your go-to-guy, he's done a complete resto on his 49-A.

It is ALIVE!!!! Good coil wire, just a NAPA for now. And she started right up.

Did a little timing adjustment before starting it. She fired right up.

Took it for a spin. Brakes need looked after. More reading tonight. Runs a little rough, but hey, it's a start.

Thanks for the help folks.

If you get into Portland often you might also want to know about The Model A Ford Works: 503-282-2212 Parts and Service. Ask for Tom or Mark.

From the looks of the gas in the sediment bowl you may want to drain the tank and clean it out before adding fresh gas. A little marvel Mystery Oil with the fresh gas will help protect the tank.

Thanks for the info on local vendors for these cars.

There is more to do for sure. We haven't added any fresh gas to her. Will look into draining and cleaning the system out.

Here is a video ( I think it will post)

The '26's issue was it was out of gas!!!
