Unhappy Greasing spring shackle

Hi Everyone,
I am having difficulty greasing an original nipple a front spring shackle. I have tried using my original Alemite gun but the fitting wont take any grease.
I have removed it so that I can insert a modern fitting and thus apply more grease pressure to the fitting and force out the blockage or old grease .
But I cant get the new fitting in . I have tried knocking the modern zerk in with a socket over the top of it to protect it.

I seem to be mashing the bottom of the modern zerk fitting up but it wont drive in.
How hard should I hit the socket with a hammer to drive the zerk in. I dont want to damage the spring perch or shackle. Any suggestions ?

Thanks
Mark
