Default Fan belt tension

Having to install a new fan belt and have located the bolt that moves the arm the fan is connected to. Looking at the Ford service manual it appears the tension adjustment screw is on the side of the oil filler. My car has a distributor and it appears that the adjustment bolt should be located behind that. I am unable to locate a bolt that resembles the adjustment screw and the only bolt that I can find is what the fan arm rests on when fully lowered but once that arm is raised it doesn’t seem to make contact. Do you set the tension simply by moving the fan arm in some models or is the fan arm fairly low when the belt is on. Hope this makes sense.

What year car? The bolt you see, that would be sticking out the right side, is what is turned to adjust the tension. You don't want it too tight, just enough for there to be some drag when the fan is turned. Too tight, you will wear the bushing in the fan hub out. If you have the book, you can see what bolt is used to adjust, just might be a tight fit to reach it.

Thanks for the info The previous owner had put a piece of leather as a temporary belt and it was really loose. Once I had an actual fan belt on everything tightened up and I was able to adjust the tension with the bolt that I was thinking might be the tensioner

This kind of post is great for getting the count up. That count is only needed for buying and selling.
