Default Books about Old Fords

Are members interested in books about Old Fords?

How about a book about Barn Finds and the story behind them?

What kind of Ford books--or old car books in general--do you enjoy?

Tony, I collect Ford Biographys, everything published by Ford itself, and maintenance manuals on Ford. I started when i got my Ford and went way overboard, improving the condition of books in my private collection, so now I have multiples of lots of books that I'd love to go to good new homes. I'm not pushing it and don't advertise, but I got em if anyone wants em.

How about all of them...! I've amassed a nice collection of automotive related books over the last 40+ years, just finished rereading Edsel Ford & E.T. Gregorie by Henry Dominguez, very interesting and entertaining. I've also collected over twenty years of Automobile Quarterly, The V8 TIMES and other car club related books, newsletters, etc. One can never read too much about any topic that interest you and I love cars, all kinds of cars, not just Ford Flatheads.

Tony, where do I start? I have always been a voracious reader, if there is nothing else in the house I'd read the cereal box in the morning!
I subscribe to many car magazines, have for years. Some would be considered heresy here, but then again I bet many read about that side of the hobby too. My archive is extensive, but I have downsized from time to time with magazines. Books that interest me would be Ford related naturally and for starters I have most of the Lorin Sorensen publications, books on '32 Fords, diesel locomotives, early gas and diesel marine engines, a few on piston engined aircraft, the early days of hot rodding, early auto racing (late '20's-late '40's mainly) and also what I would consider technical histories. Then there is early Chicago and Illinois history, federal public works projects like Hoover Dam or the WPA for example, and more.....
I never read fiction (except some of what I see on Ford Barn!) so my wife considers my taste in literature extremely dry.

Tony, with due respect, I'm not actively selling books, and don't keep an inventory list. I'd rather you post your want list and I'll respond to that if you like. I don't have non Ford books like Vic has, though.

I'm like you Larry, I read all the time about the things that interest me. I have a degree in history and I also like most of the topics you list. I am published author and I am working on a couple of books right now. I have a bunch of Ford V-8 books and a bunch of Model A books. I bought the Early Ford V-8 Books for 1937 , 1938 and 1939 before I even bought an Old Ford. I wanted to know as much as I could before I went shopping for an Old Ford. Never enough books for me--even the ones with no pictures.

Tony, when I was a kid, maybe 10 years old, my dad showed me a book he got in 1937, when he was in High School, it was a promotional leather bound hard cover book introducing the 1937 Cord. My dad had two favorite cars, the '37 Cord 812 Supercharged Convertible and the '39 Lincoln Zephyr Convertible Club Coupe. He got me interested in cars in general and convertibles in particular as well as collecting books. etc. on the subject. Unfortunately, I don't know whatever happened to the book on the '37 Cord...

Tony, I'm sure it would be... I've got in my collection an original 50th Anniversary Ford Motor Company book with the original color printed paper cover over the hard cover (I paid 50 cents for it in 1975) as well as the 75th and several 100th Anniversary publications. I've been trying to locate a 25th Anniversary book to complete the collection. We built a library in the new house to hold our collection of books (not just car related) and I've been busy stocking the shelves... Here are a few photos of some of the collection. My wife is the Stephen King fan... LOL

If you enjoy fiction read some of the books by Henry Gregor Felsen. They were kind of written for teen age boys but they still make some good reading about Ford FH's.

Yeah, I still have boxes and more boxes of books that I haven't unpacked yet. the doors on the bottom of the book shelves conceal car magazines, car club newsletters, etc.

Vic, to my knowledge, there was never a 25th anniversary Ford book. There was, however, a 40th: Forty Years 1903-1943. This book is hardcover, and is encased in a hard slip cover.

Alan, I was told about a 25th anniversary book years ago (I'd never seen one) however, having never really been into Model T's or A's, I wasn't lookin' that hard. I would like to see the 40th anniversary book though, that would be a nice one to get.

anyone ever have any of these? I think they are mostly all published in the 1970's

The Whiz Kids by John A Byrne is a really great Ford book. Henry by Walter Hayes is a good biography of Henry Ford II. Ford the Decline and Rebirth 1933-1962 Nevins and Hill. I have all of Henry Dominguezs books on Ford dealerships. The Ford Dealer Story 1903-1953 does a nice job of telling how Ford and it's dealers helped build this country.I have books like Ford Treasury of Station Wagon Living, ect. that may not be worth much but I think are neat.

I have a complete set of Ford Life with the binders. My wife worked for Lorin Sorensen and typed many of those Ford Life magazines. There's a lot of great information in those magazines. You see them come up for sale periodically on e-Bay and on the V-8 Club website. If you don't have them they should be on your list of magazines to add to your Ford information.

Won this book as a Door Prize at an Early Ford V-8 National Meet during the summer. It is pretty good with great images.

I did find one mistake--the 1939 portion claims that 1939 is the first year for under-hood battery placement. If true, that would be a big surprise to 1937 and 1938 owners.

Pretty good book. Glad to have it. I recommend it.

The best books in my collection are by the late Lorin Sorensen. They have become hard to find, but are treasures when it comes to text and pictures of Ford history. He was a student of Ford culture, and a very nice man. He put a personal note in many of my editions.

The Ford Trilogy by Allan Nevins is one of the best sources of Ford history ever written. Nevins was a biographer of the first order (look him up on Wikipedia), the Trilogy being one of his finest works. Hardback editions, not reprinted. Available today from rare book dealers and collectors. See post 21 on this thread by Bill Wzorak.

Here is a book that I have just added to my Library. The Title of this book is a little misleading, as it does not major on the 1940 Fords, nor Hot Rods. Because of this, it may have been overlooked? In fact, because of the title & cover picture, I think that it has slipped under the radar.
This Hardcover Book is chock full of original black and white photos of early Ford v8's from 1932 up to the 1940 models. Also included are the Lincoln Zephyrs and Mercurys. It also has Chapters on British and European Fords.
This Book is a fantastic book for the Early Ford V8 enthusiast and is well worth reading. However, what makes this book extra special are the great photos.
It is still available and I highly recommend adding to your Library.

I really like the technical especially original Ford, Heyer, K R Wilson... about the only novel is "The Public Image of Henry Ford" by Lewis.
I have several Ford anniversary books, "30 years of Progress" is the earliest anniversary book I am aware of.

Wow. Look at these. What a haul!

I recently purchased them from a V-8 Club member.

The 1903-1970 Ford book is a First Edition from 1970.

The Lincoln-Mercury book is a First Edition from 1971.

Both in excellent condition and includes publisher's ad.

The American Ford by Lorin Sorensen is big and awesome
and is another First Edition in excellent condition.

They went to the right home.

What kind of Ford books do the FordBarn members like?

Just got done with "The Fords in My Past" by Harold L Brock. He worked at Ford from 1929 to 1959 and worked with Henry, Edsel, and Henry II. Helped design the 9N tractor. After he left Ford he went to John Deere and was the chief engineer on the 4020. Lived to be 96 I think and very engaged about what was going on in the industry right to the end. Bought a used copy and it was less than $5 shipped to my doorstep!
