To Tooth or not to tooth? that is the question. Seriously don't use grease in the steering box.

In the beginning a grease fitting was used but 600W is what should be put in the steering box, not grease. Now just put in a square top plug.

I think I read where it was used on the sector housing to grease the shaft instead of the oil which would leak out the bushings when they were worn ??

That sounds like a "farmer fix" to me.

I tried all of the oil leak preventive parts, but none have worked. The only way I am able to stop oil from leaking out of the steering gear is to fill the gear box with synthetic grease, then add an ounce or two of hypoid gear oil. To add grease, substitute the oil fill plug with a grease fitting. The idea is to get grease to seal the oil leak points at the sector shaft bushings.

Re: To tooth steering column ( 30-31)
I'm thinking my 2 tooth box is in need of service. I have a grease fitting on my box, I haven't added anything yet as I only have about 75 miles on it since Iv'e owned it.
My issue is that in the middle it's tight, almost like it's indexing while driving straight. Once I past the resistance on either side, it's just fine. One thing I must add is that I have read in the manuals that adding grease to the steering box is a big no-no. I'd like to rebuild it but I have found that most of the parts I buy no matter the vendor are pure junk and need so much rework, I should be getting the parts for next to nothing and bought as part blanks to be machined by the customer, but I digress. Maybe the safer way is to buy one already rebuilt, ... taking the expected frustration of reworking parts out of what should othewise be a fun project. Regards Bill |

Bill, maybe it just needs an adjustment, it is supposed to have less/no slop going straight and more in a turn.

I'll try and give her an adjustment today. Perhaps I should also remove the Zerk fitting and see if someone slammed it with grease. Regards' Bill |
