Default Transmission Problems

I was attempting to replace the gasket on the transmission pan and change the filter inside last night when one of the bolts wouldn't tighten down when trying to bolt the new filter on. I checked the other bolts in that hole and they wouldn't catch anything either. There were definitely metal flakes that come out when I pulled on of the bolts out and now I'm confused on what the proper method is to repair this problem, can someone give me insight on what to do?

Sounds like you need a thread repair kit - Helicoil is one brand.

I don't know how to do either one of those, is there a sight that I can go to and learn what I need to do?

Those are very small bolts, and it sounds like they go in to aluminum. Buy or rent an inch pound torque wrench to put it together. Keep it clean.

I've got the inch and foot lbs torque wrenches but we didn't even get a chance to use them since we were hand threading them in when this bolt hole was found to be stripped.

Probably both.

Some trans pan bolt holes go clear through the pan rail.
If so you can use a longer bolt and put a nut on the top.

The hole that is stripped is for the filter, not the pan.
